School Food and Breakfast Clubs

For nearly two decades the Healthy Living Lab’s research has had a significant impact in how meals and enriching activities are provided to millions of children across the UK specially in the school holidays.

The Lab’s research with Kellogg’s, the Greggs Foundation and Blackpool Council has directly resulted in the expansion of free school breakfast clubs in hundreds of primary schools across the UK.

Working in partnership with Kellogg’s, the Lab also developed an online school breakfast training programme for teachers, governors, NHS Public Health Advisors and parent volunteers. The rollout of this training resulted in over 200 schools starting up breakfast clubs.

Professor Defeyter has presented evidence at a number of Select Committees and Inquiries that contributed to the Department for Education rolling out a National School Breakfast Programme across England; the expansion of Kellogg’s School Breakfast Clubs; the expansion of the Greggs Foundation School Breakfast Clubs, and Blackpool Council’s pioneering free school breakfast clubs offered to all primary and secondary schools in Blackpool.

The research team have since widened their research remit to include wider school-based and out-of-school food programmes.
