Environmental Sustainability

Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our University Strategy states our commitment to optimising our contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through our research, teaching, campus and operations. We are a signatory of the SDG Accord and we continue to develop our portfolio of sustainability initiatives. Our Environmental Sustainability Policy considers the impact our activities have on the wider environment and aims to minimise this impact. View the latest Annual Sustainability Report.

Our sustainability journey to date has seen some excellent results. Northumbria has recently been named 4th most sustainable University in the UK in the 2019 People & Planet University League, and ranks 50th globally in the Times Higher Education's (THE) Impact rankings.

We have been Green Gown Awards finalists for 3 years and have received the award in the 'Benefitting Society' category for 2019. We surpassed our 2020 carbon reduction target by achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions (scope 1 & 2) compared to a 2005/06 baseline. We have an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System and have obtained the Platinum EcoCampus Award.
