Northumbria’s research in Social Policy is ranked 3rd in the UK for research power (REF 2021).

The Department of Social Sciences offers an extensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Criminology, Sociology, International Relations and Politics and Professional Policing. Northumbria’s award-winning global research and partnerships will give you the real-world experience to drive positive social change on an international level, giving you the perfect start to your graduate career.

Our aim is to understand and explain the social and political world, how relationships and alliances are formed and communicated and how inequalities are justified and challenged. Our partnerships enable us to develop our curriculum, keeping it cutting edge and ensuring our research has an impact on the work and policy of important social and political organisation and services.  Students can apply their knowledge through these work and research placements, which include Arts Alliance, New Writing North, the Youth Offending Team, Procter & Gamble and the British Council, volunteering, and accredited work-related learning modules.

By studying within our Social Sciences Department, you will be joining a community of enquiring minds who are experts in their fields having strong reputations for excellence in teaching and learning, receiving the British Sociological Society and Higher Education Academy National Award for Excellence in Teaching Sociology.
