Start It Up Workshops

Start growing your enterprise, employability and business skills with Northumbria’s Start Up workshop series, designed to help become more employable and if you have a business idea, you will be ready to take your idea from concept to a trading business.

Whether you’re wanting to develop enterprise and employability skills or researching an idea or are in the early stage of business venture, this workshop series is tailored to help ensure you’ve got every business-base covered and put you in a great position to be make your venture a success. You will gain enterprise and employability skills to ensure you stand out of the crowd when researching graduate roles.

You may be a current student or recent graduate ready to start-up and be your own boss or want to gain enterprise skills, whatever your reason, apply for your place on this programme.  

We are looking for individuals who are ready to develop key skills or are considering self-employment. If you are accepted onto the workshop series we'll expect you to attend the majority of workshops and also engage in support from the Student and Graduate Enterprise team, by attending more events or business/freelancing start up.

This series covers key topics each week delivered by external advisers who are experts in their fields. The Student and Graduate Enterprise team have significant experience in skill development, helping start ups and have helped several of Northumbria’s student and graduate businesses to start and grow.

   Don't be scared to network and perfect your pitch

Join Charlotte Windebank, Co-Founder of First and winner of the Women in Innovation Award, for an insightful workshop. If networking feels intimidating, Charlotte will guide you through its significance and offer practical advice. Charlotte will guide you through a structured approach to creating your pitch. Whether you're preparing to speak to investors or engaging with potential customers or suppliers, this session will provide valuable insights to strengthen your presentation.

By the end, you'll feel more confident in attending networking events and effectively presenting both yourself and your business. 

 
26th Feb 2025 14:00-16:00    Finding your 'why' and defining your value Join Sam Clegg, Director of Highfly Ventures and Associate Lecturer at Northumbria University, as he helps you uncover your "why." What drives your passion, and how can you turn it into a business? Explore the vision and mission behind your business and learn how understanding these elements will empower you to set meaningful goals to put you on your way to success.  
5th March 2025 14:00-16:00    AI and Small Business   A workshop focused on how AI can support you running your business, delivered by our AI and UX mentor Helena Hill who is an expert in UX and AI. This session will focus on how you can spend more time focusing on the parts of business that matter while AI works in the background for you. 
12th March 2025 14:00-16:00    Business Basics - finance, tax, accounting etc  This session delivered by our finance mentor Stephen Slater from RMT Accountants. Stephen will cover all aspects of basic business finance and what documents and processes you need to implement. 
19th March 2025 14:00-16:00    Getting the price you want and Market research A joint session from our marketing mentor John McRae and Charlotte focused on achieving the price you desire. This workshop is all about finding ways to maximize your profit and return on any product or service you're offering in the marketplace. Charlotte will look at how do you find your customers, do you know who they are and what methods you should use to engage with them.

  Brand Scape - Crafting you and your company identity   John is back with a session focused on achieving the price you desire. This workshop is all about finding ways to maximize your profit and return on any product or service you're offering in the marketplace.

  Getting Legal Savvy  

Join Riz Shahid, Tech and Commercial Lawyer at Square One Law. Riz will walk you through the legal aspects of running a business. This important workshop is a must-attend to ensure your business is compliant and legally sound.

Creating your digital footprint - social media success    

Sam is back with an interactive workshop designed around you! This session will help you explore your online presence, identify your target audience, and develop strategies to reach them. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a clear digital action plan to move forward with. 

You can sign up to as many workshops as you like! Cover every business base with attending all of them.

No matter your area of study, we're looking for individuals who are wanting to immerse themselves into the world of enterprise and skill development. The most important thing is that you're serious about skill development.  

Places are limited and attendance to majority of sessions is crucial, you will receive support from the Student and Graduate Enterprise team.
