Ian Jones

HLS_Ian -Jones _Student _MA-Social -WorkWhat qualifications do you have?

BA (Hons) International Studies and a Diploma in Politics and Government.

Why did you choose the programme?

I have wanted to be a social worker for a number of years and the time was now right for me to take the leap and go back into studying. The Masters at Northumbria is highly respected and I knew it would be a good start to my career.

What are the best things about Newcastle for students?

Newcastle is a wonderful city that is small enough to walk around but big enough so you never get bored. There are quite a few good cinemas and loads of nice pubs and places to eat. Plus the coast and countryside are both within easy reach if you want to head out of town.

Favourite thing about University?

The Library is really useful and well stocked. The online research facilities are great too and the free bus to Coach Lane from town is a great help for students that work away from the city centre.

What did you like most about the programme?

I really enjoy the placements which are brilliant for getting to put the learning into
practice.

What are you doing now?

I’m still studying and on my final placement but I’m hoping to find work as a social worker upon completing the course . Even in this climate, I’m hopeful I stand a good chance given that I’ll have a Masters and plenty of experience in a good placement behind me.

Do you have any advice for anyone applying for the programme?

Make sure you read around social issues and the role of social workers, which are much more diverse than many would guess. On the course, try to plan your work well in advance and set yourself a deadline a few days before the actual one, to give you time to change anything that may need improving and to reduce your panic levels. It’s a good skill for life after uni too.
