Junior Evolve

Junior Evolve 

Our Junior Evolve programme is delivered by our dedicated team of Junior Coordinators and student reps. This activity focuses on raising students' awareness and aspiration to Higher Education through a series of interactive events and activities. Please note, all of our activity is free of charge. 

We offer a range of workshops and interactive activities, both on and off campus, which aim to:

  • Support aspirations and raise awareness of Higher Education
  • Introduce students to Higher Education and the range of subjects available to study
  • Support the development of study skills to be successful at university
  • Provide opportunities to meet current Northumbria University students

New for 2024/5 - NU Explorers 

A sustained, progressive programme of activity delivered to students in Years 5 & 6 in schools with high proportions of FSM students. We aim to develop sustained partnerships with 3 primary schools.

The programme includes sessions focused on core subjects, introduction to HE, academic sessions and IAG. Our aims are to increase student knowledge and awareness of the benefits of higher education and graduate employment. This is in line with the Northumbria University Access and Participation Plan.

The programme will include a series of 6 interventions across two years, culminating in a ‘graduation’ on campus for NU Explorer graduates and their teachers, parents and carers. 

The sessions include: 

  • Maths in Books and English Escape Room 
  • Imagining the Sun - STEM + Art session 
  • Music - Handbell session 
  • Language - French or Spanish bespoke 
  • Star Student - Giant board game introducing ‘student life’

New for 2024/5 - NU Navigators

The programme includes sessions focused on introduction to HE, academic sessions and IAG. Our aims are to increase student knowledge and awareness of the benefits of higher education and graduate employment, increase student capacity to navigate higher education and graduate employment sectors and make informed choices. This is in line with the Northumbria University Access and Participation Plan.

Junior Evolve Workshops

This workshop gives pupils an insight into university life in an interactive environment using guided discovery learning. The pupils will be presented with a series of scenarios that a student may face and will be awarded points based on the decisions they make. Pupils will find out about the academic and extracurricular activities on offer to students.

This session is designed to introduce some of the key aspects and options students have at university including courses, social life and extra circular activities. Focused on team work the students will design and present characters which they have created based on a student’s uni bag, allowing the other teams to ask questions about their character. The students will then have an opportunity to ask a Graduate Ambassador and current students any questions they have about university.

Best of Business gives students a fun introduction to thinking about aspects of a business they will know but haven't thought of before. The activities include Branding Bingo, examples of adverts and a Cash Flow Challenge. Students will grasp a general overview of business concepts and an insight into what Business students learn at university.

The game consists of various rounds in which four teams of pupils will compete against each other. These rounds introduce Year 9 pupils to the possibilities of further education and encourages them to carefully consider the educational choices they are making from this year onward, as well as introducing concepts and vocabulary used in Higher Education.

Study Smart is a new and interactive workshop designed for students taking on their GCSEs. The session covers learning styles, revision techniques and tools, transferable skills and other top tips for revision.

This activity is designed to help Year 11 students with the transition from GCSEs through to sixth form. The workshop aims to help students make informed decisions, introduce Higher Education, and address key study skills. Pupils will take part in a skills analysis, find out the differences between school and sixth form, discuss the opportunities they could take advantage of during sixth form and what the benefits of the sixth form experience.

High Tunstall College of Science Business Project

A collaboration between HTCS and Northumbria University Business School including 6 interventions across 3 months for 12 year 8 students.

The purpose of the project was to raise aspirations in Maths, Business, and Higher Education. The project had support from academic staff, placement students and current student reps and culminated with the students presenting their work to parents and carers, teachers and visitors, including Jane Arnfield the Dean of Students, who presented their ‘degrees’.
