Sport (Women's Coaching and Officiating) Scholarship for September 2023

Northumbria University is committed to supporting students with outstanding abilities in both their academic studies and wider interest areas.

The University is launching the Postgraduate Sport (Women’s Coaching and Officiating) Scholarship for the first time this year.  The scholarship is aimed at enabling aspiring women coaches and officials to gain financial support and will award the successful student £2,000 to assist with living costs and professional development at Northumbria University.  

The scholarship open to highly gifted women who are applying to study on a Full-Time Postgraduate (Taught or Research) programme in any Faculty/Subject at the University in the academic year 2023/24.

The Postgraduate Sport (Women’s Coaching and Officiating) Scholarship is open to highly gifted women, and you must also:

  • Be a UK/Home applicant (Home includes UK students and those eligible to pay home fees)
  • Apply to study a Postgraduate course commencing in September 2023 at the Newcastle Upon Tyne campus
  • Meet the terms and conditions and accept your offer
  • Be a self-funded student or supported via a research grant
  • Be actively engaged as a coach or umpire/official to at least club or county level and hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in a NGB recognised sport

  • The student selected will not be eligible for other Northumbria Scholarships including the Performance Sport Scholarship
  • If you are selected and are a Northumbria Alumni, you will also be eligible for the Alumni Discount
  • The successful student will receive a £2,000 cash payment in the first year of a postgraduate course studied at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Campus.
  • The cash award will be paid as: 25% in November 2023, 25% in February 2024, and 50% in May 2024
  • If your course is longer than one year, the scholarship will be provided in the first year of study only
  • If you defer your place, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn
  • Northumbria reserves the right to withdraw this scheme at any point
  • The University's decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal

  • To apply, students must complete a Sport (Women’s Coaching and Officiating) Scholarship application form.  Selection will be based upon the strength of the application form.  If short-listed, evidence of sport qualification and endorsement by the applicant’s club or National Governing Body must also be provided.
  • The successful applicants will be notified once the evaluation panel has met, by no later than Friday 15 September 2023
