Cobham-Ultra UK Scholarships for Postgraduate Applicants 24/25

This information is for Postgraduate UK/Home students applying to study at Northumbria University in September 2024.

This prestigious scholarship will award three students who choose to study one of the below disciplines with a full fee waiver and an additional £3,500 to help support living costs.

Cobham Group Limited is a group of aerospace, defence, and technology businesses, which employs 10,000 people, has extensive contracts with the British military and is seen as a world leader in air-to-air refuelling technology.  The firm, based in Dorset, also makes electronic warfare systems and communications for military vehicles.

Since 2020, Cobham has further developed its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, with the aim of replenishing the STEM talent pipeline in the UK to ensure that graduates see Cobham as an employer of choice. To be eligible for a Cobham-Ultra Scholarship you must:

  • Be a UK/Home applicant with 'Home' fee status - This includes students domiciled in Jersey, Guernsey, The Channel Islands, Ireland and Isle of Man
  • Have applied to study on one of the eligible Full-Time one year* programmes, commencing September 2024 at the Newcastle Upon Tyne campus
  • Meet the terms and conditions and accepted your offer
  • Be a self-funded student - ie; not have fees which are paid in full or in part through a sponsorship arrangement (employer funded)

You must also meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • You are a woman
  • You live in a neighbourhood with a low progression rate to Higher Education.  Please use your main home address and not your term time address and use the Postcode Checker to check your neighbourhood progression rate**
  • You are an Estranged/Young Adult Carer
  • You are from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background

*Advanced Practice students are eligible to apply however, the scholarship will not cover the Advanced Practice element and you will be liable for those fees

**If your POLAR4 young participation quintile is identified as 1 or 2, you will be eligible to apply OR; After searching your postcode, click view detailed results and if your TUNDRA MSOA quintile is identified as 1 or 2, you will be eligible to apply (This only applies to applicants living in England)

  • The students selected for a Cobham-Ultra Scholarship will not be eligible for other Northumbria Postgraduate Scholarships
  • The Cobham-Ultra Scholarship is awarded as a full fee waiver
  • The successful students will also receive a £3,500 cash payment to support living costs
  • Payments will be made as 25% of total in November 2024, 25% of total in February 2025 and 50% of total in May 2025
  • The reduction to fees will be made following enrolment
  • Advanced Practice students are eligible to apply however, the scholarship will not cover the Advanced Practice element and you will be liable for those fees
  • Sponsored students are not eligible for the Cobham-Ultra Scholarship
  • If you transfer to a course that is not on the eligibility list, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn  
  • If you defer your place, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn
  • Northumbria University reserves the right to withdraw this scheme at any point
  • The University’s decision is final and cannot be challenged; there is no right of appeal

 

  • There is a competitive selection process for this scholarship scheme.  Applicants need to apply via online written application; a selection panel will consider all eligible applications.  In no more than 3000 characters;  In your future career, describe how you will address society’s needs.  What are they (in summary) and how can the knowledge you would gain from your chosen Masters Degree help overcome them.  Provide 3 examples Applications will be considered on the strength of response.
  • The successful applicant will be notified once the evaluation panel has met, by no later than Friday 27 September 2024.
