The MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC) promotes lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces. The scheme provides financial support in the form of a single up-front payment in each of a maximum of three separate financial years.

Your application for Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) can be made via the ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credits Administrative Service) website. Your application must be made at least 25 working days prior to your course start date.
When making your application to the Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme, you will require the following details:

Once approved you will receive a Claim Authorisation Note (CAN).
Our tuition fees vary depending on the level and mode of study and whether you are part-time or full-time student. Please visit our Fees and Funding webpages for details.
You will normally be required to pay a personal contribution toward your tuition fees. If this is the case, your Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) contribution will be deducted from your course fee, and you will be invoiced for the remainder.

If you are studying at Newcastle or London Campus, please submit your CAN to the Finance Team via your Student Portal. You must do this as soon as you receive your enrolment email invitation. Please note, if we do not receive your CAN prior to our invoicing stage, it may become void, and you will become liable for paying your own tuition fees.
If you are a Carousel Distance Learning student, please submit your CAN to your Enrolment Advisor before the enrolment deadline for your first module. If you are unsure of your Enrolment Advisor’s contact details, please get in touch with the Carousel Enrolment Team who will be happy to advise. Please note, it your CAN has not been submitted to your Enrolment Advisor on time, you will be required to pay for your first module on enrolment or defer your module start date.

- After studying 60 credits students are eligible to exit the programme and receive a Postgraduate Certificate.
- After studying 120 credits students are eligible to exit the programme and receive a Postgraduate Diploma.
- After studying 180 credits students are eligible to exit the programme and receive a full Masters degree.
If you have received correspondence from Northumbria University regarding outstanding tuition fees but are in receipt of Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC), the University may be unaware that your funding has been approved, or your ELC may not cover the whole cost of your tuition fees.
You must submit your Claim Authorisation Note (CAN) as soon as possible to the University. We will then ensure that your student account is updated to reflect that you are in receipt of ELCAS (Enhanced Learning Credit Administrative Service) funding.
Please submit your CAN to the Finance Team via Ask4Help Online in your Student Portal.
Alternatively, if you are a Carousel Distance Learning student, you can provide your CAN to your Student Success Advisor. If you are unsure of their details, please contact the Student Success Team.
In the circumstance that your ELCAS funding does not cover the full amount of your tuition fees, you will be invoiced for the remaining balance. Please see the FAQ "Paying the remaining balance if my ELCAS funding doesn't cover my whole tuition fees" for further information.
If you are required to pay an additional fee contribution, you can click here to see our payment terms. If you are required to pay a personal fee contribution to your tuition fees, this should be done as soon as possible. ELCAS will not permit the Northumbria University to submit an invoice for a claim on your behalf until your personal fee contribution has been paid in full. The claim must be submitted to ELCAS within nine months of the start date of your course. Late payment may result in your Claim Authorisation Note becoming void. In these circumstances you will become liable for paying your own tuition fees in full.
If you study part time you will be charged for the modules you undertake in each academic year. Various modules attract different numbers of credits, and tuition fees are calculated for every 10 credits which are undertaken. For more information regarding part time tuition fees, please visit the course page. Please note that the amount charged per 10 credits normally increases each academic year.
ELCAS allows one Claim Authorisation Note (CAN) per year therefore, only one CAN will be accepted by the University per academic year.
