Our Alumni - Work For Us
What will I learn on this module?
In this module you will begin to apply your theoretical, pedagogical and subject knowledge, gained through engagement in university based lectures, seminars and workshops, in school based settings. This will take the form of non-assessed placements - during the year. You will focus on the development of specific skills and interventions, with individual children, small groups and whole classes. During these placement days you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and understanding and develop your ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in professional school contexts for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will begin to plan, teach and manage children’s learning across the appropriate curriculum for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2, with appropriate support from experienced professionals. You will develop valuable skills including the ability to reflect upon your practice and make links between the theoretical aspects of the programme practice in early years and primary educational settings. Through this reflection you will begin to set yourself appropriate professional targets. You will begin to develop a sound knowledge of curriculum pedagogy in core and foundation subjects, for the relevant age phases, through supporting experienced teachers and carrying out set tasks independently. This module is designed to enable you to begin to gain an understanding of, and begin to gather evidence towards the standards and requirements for qualified teacher status.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through school-based experiences how to apply your emerging theoretical, pedagogical and subject knowledge in classroom practice including the use of ICT across the curriculum, for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will begin to apply this knowledge through the planning and delivering effective activities, interventions and lessons, initially to small groups within the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will reflect upon the effectiveness of your own practice and set yourself targets to promote your professional development. You will develop a range of other professional skills including your ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, communicate effectively, adopt a flexible approach, and be highly organised and overcome professional challenges through being dedicated and resilient. The combination of all of these skills will allow you to gain an understanding of and begin to gather evidence in support of the requirements for qualified teacher status (QTS).
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported and/or mentored by both academic and partnership staff during this placement. You will draw on your university based lectures, online materials and workshops and engage in tasks set by academic staff. This module leader will provide support and guidance relating to the appropriate use of all placement documentation whilst on school placement, outlining all of the placement expectations. Throughout the school placement the module leader will be your University based contact should you have any further queries. You will receive regular support from a designated lead mentor and school-based mentor throughout your placement who will help you to reflect on your experiences and to set targets to ensure your development.
You will spend time over the year in both schools and Early Years settings. In school, under the guidance of an experienced teacher, you will gain the opportunity to observe good practice and carry out tasks to support children’s learning. Using a placement specific tutoring system, the University will monitor your progress and support you in schools and Early Years settings. This network of support will ensure that you make the best possible progress in your first year.
