EF3056 - Listening and Speaking Skills

What will I learn on this module?

The curriculum emphasises comprehension of spoken English through conversation, lectures and multimedia, with a gentle, scaffolded introduction to university study. You will develop the ability to extract key information and express yourself clearly on familiar topics and begin to understand relationships between arguments and topics. Interactive exercises and real-life scenarios will enhance practical communication skills, and vocabulary expansion will support effective expression. Pronunciation refinement and engaging activities aim to build confidence in both listening and speaking. Assessments are geared towards reinforcing B1-level competencies, ensuring you can navigate diverse spoken contexts with ease and proficiency.

How will I learn on this module?

Learning on the module will be communicative and task-based, emphasising practice to develop your language ability and confidence. A focus on functional language and pronunciation will provide you with the foundations for engaging with a diverse student population and exposure to and analysis of spoken English in a variety of mediums, including live and recorded speech, will improve your ability to comprehend simple spoken information and instructions.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment process

You will complete a combination of self-assessments, role-plays and submitted tasks that help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement throughout the module, which will be supplemented by peer and/or tutor-led feedback.

Summative assessment process



You will complete a separate portfolio of tasks for each of the key skills involved in the module, listening and speaking.


These portfolios will comprise in-semester tasks that give an indication of your mastery and engagement at key points in the module, as well as end of semester examinations under timed conditions that determine your overall achievement against the module learning outcomes.

In this intermediate (B1) level integrated listening and speaking module, you will strengthen your communicative competence in preparation for studies requiring upper-intermediate (B2) level, giving you the necessary foundation to cope with the linguistic demands of the next stage of your studies.
