Northumbria’s Healthcare Management Postgraduate Certificate will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and confidence you need to initiate and sustain real change within the complex and rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

The course is designed to address global needs within the healthcare sector for committed personnel with strong management competencies. You will learn as part of a multicultural student cohort, from academics who have extensive experience in practice. This will give you access to new perspectives on healthcare, which will inform your future professional practice.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Management, an applicant must hold:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a health-related field (Nursing, Midwifery, Healthcare Management, Public Health, Allied Health, Environmental Health, Dentistry, Medicine); OR
  • A Bachelor's Degree in an unrelated discipline (that is, a degree in a discipline other than medicine, nursing, public health, environmental health, allied health, psychology clinical health, research or biomedical health); OR
  • A health-related Diploma PLUS two years relevant work experience in the healthcare or other relevant sectors; OR
  • A minimum of five years equivalent full-time work experience in administration, management and leaderships roles within health care organisations and students would be expected to have career goals to work in health-related organisations or in the wider healthcare sector.

Progression for students admitted to the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Management to the Master of Science Healthcare Management is dependent on achieving a minimum pass grade in all modules of the Postgraduate Certificate.

English language requirements apply to international applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:

  • A minimum overall band score of 6.5 in IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.0.
  • The university accepts a large number of UK and International Qualifications in place of IELTS.  You can find details of acceptable tests and the required grades you will need on our Acceptable English Qualifications page. 

English test results must be no more than two years old.

Module Information

AC0779 - Strategic Management of Healthcare

This module will enable you to understand and critically appraise theories and concepts of strategic management approaches in relation to healthcare organisations. You will be introduced to the conceptual foundations of management, focussing on the essential strategic tasks of leadership and management. In particular research and theory on organisational behaviour will foster your understanding of the impact of positive and negative relationships within the organisational healthcare culture. You will learn how leadership and change management skills are addressed as an integral part of management in relation to communication and project planning for healthcare leaders. The module is particularly relevant if you are a senior or aspiring manager working in healthcare but is also very relevant if you have an interest in management in healthcare organisations. As a manager in a strategic role, you could be setting objectives for the organisation and creating the routes towards reaching these goals. Key area you will study include:- Understanding healthcare organizations: Challenges for Healthcare Management: global perspectives Strategic Management: levels of strategy; Strategic planning Service Area Competitor Analysis: Determining obstacles and boundaries Internal Environmental Analysis: Resources Management for high performance healthcare The Organizational setting: The meaning of organizational behaviour; Organizational practices Managers and managerial behaviour: Principles of management; Managerial roles; Managerial effectiveness Culture and climate in healthcare organizations: Cross-cultural leadership You will critically apply knowledge within areas of your discipline and /or healthcare management that will support your future employability and long term career prospects.

AC7030 - Developing Management and Leadership Competencies in Healthcare

This module will support you in developing your personal and professional competencies as an existing or aspiring manager. You will develop your self-awareness and self-management, interpersonal skills and your abilities in working with others. You will focus specifically on developing core management and leadership skills and understanding the theories, concepts and models that underpin those skills. The broad areas covered by this module include: Self -awareness and reflection Interpersonal skills including emotional Intelligence Team dynamics and team working Communication You will work on further enhancing your personal effectiveness by focusing on how you work effectively with others, through collaborating, influencing, and negotiating. You will have opportunities to consider ways in which leadership and management skills can be applied in a healthcare context. The importance of self- awareness and reflection will be a key feature of this module. On completion of the module, you will be able to critically analyse your own competence in relation to your professional practice or future career aspirations and present a personal development plan, which is appropriate to your chosen career context.

AC7118 - Health Improvement: Behaviours, Practices, Interventions and Management

In this module, you will learn what health improvement is and how to critically understand the role that health behaviours, practices, interventions and forms of health communication play in health improvement. You will explore the origins, content and organisation of health improvement practices in the UK and beyond (including cross-national comparisons and international policies and practices). The module will enable you to identify and critically reflect on the main theoretical principles underlying health improvement and critically apply these to improving health and in response to health inequalities and inequities. You will examine how various forms of intervention in health improvement (including community development, social marketing and critical health communication) can be (and have been) used to influence health and social change. You will learn how to effectively solve real-world problems and develop skills to enable you to plan, implement and evaluate appropriate health improvement interventions. You will also engage in peer-learning, drawing on the wide variety of practice experience possessed by our cohorts. Key topics you will study include:- • Introduction to Health Improvement: Origins, Content and Organisation • Theories of Behaviour Change and Health • Health Communication: Theories, Approaches and Practice • Cross-national Case-studies in Health Promotion: Developing Critical Understandings of Wellbeing • Social Marketing and Health Improvement • Health Improvement and Community Development (including Community Wealth Building, Asset based, Foundational Economy etc) Health Informatics and ‘Learning Health Systems’ • Evaluation, Ethics and Public Participation in Health Improvement • Health Improvement: Comparisons and Lessons
