What will I learn on this module?

This module will provide you with further training in the practice of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy with more complex, vulnerable populations traumatised by adverse life experiences and should be accessed sequentially after completion of Part A. EMDR Therapy is a complex, multi-faceted, empirically supported psychological treatment, which integrates many successful elements from a range of evidence-based treatment interventions. This module will enable you to effectively incorporate EMDR Therapy into your existing clinical practice as it will build up on and advance your knowledge and skills developed in Part A. Indicative module content includes:
• EMDR Therapy as an eight-phase treatment intervention
• The theoretical framework of Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) as a transdiagnostic means of case conceptualisation and treatment planning.
• AIP Case Conceptualisation – treatment planning, intervention, and outcomes.
• Ethical, moral, and legal aspects in EMDR Therapy.
• Working with unspoken trauma, shame, moral injury, and/or fear based adverse life experiences.
• Theory related to EMDR Therapy and trauma-related conditions for which there is emerging empirical support for the approach and intervention.
• Legal, ethical and research issues regarding EMDR utilisation.
• Advanced EMDR Therapy technical skills and procedures for working with more complex and vulnerable populations.
• Managing challenging clients in EMDR Therapy including dissociative disorders.
• Distinguish essential consensus and distinction between EMDR Therapy and CBT – Trauma Focussed, Prolonged Exposure Therapy and other trauma-focussed treatment interventions.
• EMDR Therapy within the context of international trauma capacity building.
• Future research and developments in EMDR Therapy.
• EMDR Therapy clinical governance and EMDR Europe Accreditation for Practitioners and Consultants (Clinical Supervisors).
• EMDR Therapy clinical supervision and consultation.
By building on your skills so far, you will learn to recognise, critically evaluate, and synthesise the evidence to effectively incorporate and apply EMDR Therapy in challenging contexts. The module develops your ability to identify gaps in current provision and consider future research and development underpinned by current legal, ethical, and professional guidance. To fulfil the EMDR Europe requirements for EMDR Standard Training participants must have 100% attendance and demonstrate competency during EMDR practicum/ self-experience sessions to be awarded EMDR Europe Completion of Standard Training Certificate. In addition, attendance records will also be used including ‘sign in’ & ‘sign out’ sheets.

How will I learn on this module?

This module takes a similar delivery approach to Part A by adopting the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (La, Dyjur, & Bair, 2018). Delivery of content will be via a blend of web-based resources and face to face learning using the ‘flipped classroom’ approach (Bergman & Sams, 2012), This approach to module delivery promotes active learning as it works to accommodate your learning needs and abilities by offering flexibility and direction gained from your existing knowledge and the preparatory web-based materials which are then explored and applied during the face-to-face sessions creating new knowledge. A positive learning environment will promote active learning through didactic teaching, interspersed by group discussion, use of online materials, experiential learning, supervised low fidelity simulation and critical reflection of your own practice. Low fidelity simulation sessions will involve self-experience. These sessions are facilitated by experienced EMDR Europe Accredited Consultants with suitable safeguards in place including debrief periods at the end of each session. If needed, you also have access to Northumbria University Student Life and Wellbeing services. Your Programme Lead and Personal Tutor are also available to offer guidance on academic support throughout the programme.
Offering multiple ways of learning helps you to engage along with giving you the opportunity to express your learning through action and/or expression. Encouraged by a positive learning environment, you are likely to feel more engaged and motivated in your learning. Authentic assessment means you that any assessments throughout the module will mirror real life activities. Authentic assessment will be an on-going key feature of the module, via group clinical supervision, online materials, and supervised low fidelity simulation. Clinical supervision of professional practice will be at the heart of learning, forming partnerships with peers in a critical exploration of professional issues and challenging contexts. You will continue to develop as a reflexive practitioner by monitoring your own practice, setting personal standards, whilst at the same time placing the client/patient at the heart of clinical practice. The approach will adopt a cyclical approach, with theory informing practice and practice informing theory. Authentic formative assessments embedded within the delivery prepare you for the summative assessment requirements. All assessments within the programme will be operated in accordance with standard operating procedures and marked and moderated in accordance with the Assessment Regulations for Taught Awards (ARTA) ensuring the academic standards required for student awards are met.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by the module team who will guide your learning and academic assessment throughout the module. External specialists (EMDR Europe Consultants) may lead some of the primary teaching sessions, but mainly assist (dependent upon numbers) the practicum/ self-experience and participate in the wider issue of participant’s clinical practice development. The module lead was involved in developing the online materials and identified reading, assessment exercises, and will provide much of your face-to-face teaching, and feedback. This module is supported by Blackboard Ultra which includes the module information, assessment information, power-point presentations and online materials, reading lists and relevant web links.
As identified above, peer support is encouraged and facilitated via the group clinical supervision embedded within this module and your programme of study. These sessions will also help you prepare for the summative assessment. Your Programme Lead and Personal Tutor are also available to offer guidance on academic support throughout the programme. The University Libraries offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. A variety of study-skills-related help sheets, and online videos can be found on the library Skills Plus site. You can also access a range of student support and wellbeing services via Student Central or by accessing the Student Life and Wellbeing pages and Ask4Help via your electronic student portal.
You will also have an allocated Personal Tutor who will provide advice and support in relation to academic, procedural, and (where desired and appropriate) personal matters during the programme of study you have enrolled on. What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate a critical, comprehensive understanding of the concepts of the theoretical framework of EMDR therapy – adaptive information processing, and how this informs case conceptualisation and treatment planning with more complex, vulnerable populations.

2. Critically evaluate and synthesise the empirical evidence in support of EMDR therapy as a trauma-focussed intervention for adverse life events across the life course, and how this applies to more complex, vulnerable populations.


Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Engage effectively in reflective practice to develop a structured and self-managed approach to learning, maintaining a record of clinical activities and application of EMDR therapy as part of enhanced clinical practice and professional development.

4. Evidence a critical understanding and application of appropriate adaptations of EMDR therapy to diverse clinical, and cultural populations using a scientist practitioner framework and consideration of ethical and professional standards, including supervised practicum sessions (PAD).

5. Apply a self-directed approach to identifying needs, analysing needs, and formulating solutions and evaluation strategies within the context of effectively integrating EMDR therapy into clinical practice supported by EMDR clinical supervision and consultation, the eight-phase protocol underpinned with the Adaptive Information Processing framework being central to this process (PAD).

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
In your clinical supervision sessions, you will produce and deliver case presentations (with suitable provision and protection for confidentiality) in which connections are forged between real life situations and that of the practical and theoretical content of EMDR therapy. This will provide you with opportunity for peer and academic verbal feedback which will support the development of your summative work. (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Practice Assessment Document (PAD)
During clinical supervision, you are required to present your evidence to your clinical supervisor, to receive feedback on your progress in practice, and discuss your aims and objectives for the next stage of your practice learning.
Guidance will be given about the nature of evidence and structure of the Practice Assessment Document during seminars and tutorials and on the module Blackboard Ultra site (MLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Summative Assignment:
Summative assessment on this module will be via the following:
Part 1: 1500-word count. Virtual poster presentation.
Choose a client from your own clinical practice. Present an overview of your application of theory and evidence in identifying needs, analysing needs, and formulating solutions and evaluation strategies for your treatment of this client. You should outline the application of EMDR therapy for either PTSD/Complex PTSD/ other (must have trauma focus), highlighting each of the eight-phases of the protocol.
Make a 20-minute video recording to accompany your PPT slide. These must be submitted together. (MLO 1, 2, 4).
Submission will be via Blackboard Ultra located in module site.
Summative feedback on final submission of the assessed work will be given in a structured format to inform future practice.

Part 2: 1500 words Reflective workbook
The reflective workbook will comprise 3 elements:
• Reflection on professional development in the context of the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health EMDR therapy Competency Framework.
• Reflection on the impact of EMDR clinical supervision on integration of theory and evidence into practice.
Audit of clinical practice. (MLO 3, 4, 5)
Submission will be via Turnitin located in module site.
Summative feedback on final submission of the assessed work will be given in a structured format to inform future practice.

Part 3: Practice Assessment Document (PAD): You are required to complete 5 hours EMDR clinical supervision/ case consultation (stipulated by EMDR Europe to be included in EMDR Europe Standard Training). These hours can be used as part of the requirements for future EMDR Europe Training should you wish to seek EMDR Europe Accreditation as a Practitioner following this programme.
Your clinical supervisor and module lead will assess this review of the evidence collected within your Practice Assessment Document (PAD). (MLO 3, 4, 5).
Submission will be via Turnitin located in module site.
Summative feedback on final submission of the assessed work will be given in a structured format to inform future practice.
