As a Postgraduate of the Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy programme here at Northumbria University, you will build on your existing knowledge and advance your skills through gaining a robust understanding regarding the theory and practice of EMDR Therapy and how this can be utilised, and effectively integrated into clinical practice. The depth of the theoretical and evidence-based material sets it apart from the existing commercial EMDR Therapy training provision (EMDRUK; EMDR Academy), thus enabling you to apply your critical thinking and synthesis within your learning and within the field of EMDR therapy. As a Postgraduate of this programme, you will:

Critically appraise the advanced study of EMDR Therapy as a psychotherapeutic intervention in the treatment of trauma memories through a flexible, interdisciplinary, student-centred forum, based upon intrinsic values of academic openness.
Systematically develop essential clinical skills and expertise acquisition in EMDR therapy, to maximize theory practice integration.
Formulate advanced awareness through the critical appraisal of the ethical and professional standards of good practice in EMDR Therapy.
Critique, and contribute, to the existing empirical evidence base in support of EMDR therapy within the scientist-practitioner framework, monitoring how this aligns or deviates from other trauma-focused, psychological treatment modalities.
Contribute to the wider aspects of trauma-informed care, to include improving access and availability of EMDR therapy in the form of EMDR informed trauma capacity building.

This course is designed for registered/licensed mental health professionals, engaged in clinical practice, and are actively working with psychological trauma populations, who wish to apply effective EMDR Therapy in their clinical practice. Unlike the existing commercial EMDR Therapy training models available, this programme offers you an internationally recognised award of a Postgraduate Certificate qualification.

As part of Northumbria University’s high impact interventions 5HighImpact - Home (sharepoint.com), the university supports the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in the development of learning, teaching and assessment (La, Dyjur, & Bair, 2018).

Through the promotion of inclusive curriculum design, the UDL principles are designed to assist and enable you to achieve and excel in your studies irrespective of your individual learning needs. The principles provide a blueprint for the development and delivery of teaching, student support and student assessment (Maguire and Hall, 2018).

The three principles of UDL ensure there are (i) multiple means of engagement, which promotes the offer of different opportunities for learner engagement and involvement; (ii) multiple means of representation, which provides learners with a range of ways to access and engage with course information, resources and support; (iii) multiple means of expression, which enables learners to demonstrate what they have learnt, mastered and know in a variety of forms (La, Dyjur, & Bair, 2018).

Within our programme we have used UDL principles at both a programme and module level to enhance educational delivery, student engagement and support (Burgstahler, 2013). Across the programme, there is a strong emphasis on active learning, utilising a blended learning approach underpinned by andragogy and evidence-based technology enhanced learning, with the majority of learning taking place in the practice setting.

Utilising a flipped classroom approach (Bergman & Sams, 2012), you will undertake directed independent theoretical preparatory work via a blend of online materials and reading prior to the face-to-face delivery. A positive learning environment will promote active learning through didactic teaching interspersed by group discussion, use of online materials, experiential learning, supervised low fidelity simulation and critical reflection of their own practice. Low fidelity simulation sessions will involve self-experience. These sessions are facilitated by experienced EMDR Europe Accredited Consultants with suitable safeguards in place including debrief periods at the end of each session. If needed, you also have access to Northumbria University Student Life and Wellbeing services.

From the onset of the programme, the programme team will create a sense of engagement and belonging within the university. As part of your student journey, you will be part of a learning community which will be accessible via discussion boards, peer review activities, student and staff committee meetings and student representation. You will also be allocated a Personal Tutor. The Personal Tutor will assist in your integration and can meet with you on an individual basis. The Personal Tutor role is pastoral and relates to your wellbeing, personal and professional development.

Although you will already be engaged in clinical practice, undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate EMDR Therapy programme will equip you to develop your expertise in the field of trauma psychology in relation to developing specialist clinical practice and expertise, clinical supervision, consultation, and potential research and development.

Developing expertise in EMDR Therapy allows you to progress your career in a manner that can be extremely multi-faceted. As an EMDR clinician you can progress towards becoming an EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner, Consultant/ Clinical Supervisor and Trainer. Your expertise can also be related to a specific speciality where EMDR Therapy could be used, enhanced, and further developed. These include for example, working with younger and older populations, ethnic and cultural adaption and sensitivity, trauma capacity building, and early trauma interventions. Undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate EMDR Therapy programme will also give you entry to continue your studies to master’s level and beyond. With your Postgraduate Certificate you will be eligible to RPL (recognition of prior learning -time restricted to 5 years post award) your awarded credits to enter year 2 of the MSc Health and Social Practice. The hours of clinical supervision/case consultation gathered within this programme can be used, in part towards the requirements of EMDR Europe Training for those seeking practitioner EMDR Europe Accreditation status following this programme. Please note: EMDR Europe Accreditation requires additional hours and fees for the individual which are not part of Northumbria University’s programme offer.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements for Post Grad Cert, will be evidence of successful level 6 study within the last 5 years, plus 120 credits or equivalence at level 5, plus applicants must provide evidence of the specific eligibility criteria as listed below. To achieve the programme learning outcomes suitable applicants at the point of application must be able to demonstrate that they are working in a clinical environment that has direct access to appropriate clinical populations. Northumbria University holds no responsibility to provide any clinical placements.

commencement of the programme. NB: these external clinical supervision
