PE7005 - Quantity Surveying Practice and Management

What will I learn on this module?

This module aims to further develop your understanding of the key processes and practices applied within the quantity surveying profession. The module has been designed to be aligned with the RICS competencies framework.

The module will cover the following topics:

• Strategic Procurement,
• Commercial Management (Including Financial Control of Projects)
• Project Management (Including Supply chain management and Health and Safety Management)
• Building Measurement (NRM2)
• Civil Engineering Technology and Measurement (CESMM4)

How will I learn on this module?

The module is delivered entirely online via our electronic learning platform (eLP). You will interact with a range of materials on the module site. The module home page provides you with quick access to detailed information about the module in an interactive, easily accessible format. The teaching materials support your learning. Each session delivers flexible, interactive learning materials, accessible in a variety of formats such as audio and video presentations, podcasts, MP3 files and lesson notes. Tasks to extend and test your learning are interspersed within the learning materials. A range of different tasks, with formative feedback, are aimed at supporting your learning style. In addition to this you will be encouraged to utilise peer to peer support opportunities through the use of eLP supported platforms for interaction or, if you choose to, external student supported platforms. Each session is supported by directed reading accessed through the electronic reading list.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be an autonomous, self-motivated learner within a supportive distance-learning environment. You will be introduced to the module by the module tutor in an introductory video. The online module sessions and interactive tasks form the cornerstone for supporting you during your study.. Academic support is available from the teaching team and you will be able to contact the tutors via various means such as emails, discussion boards and seminars. Focused academic support coupled with timely formative and summative feedback should enable you to meet your full academic potential within this module.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

• MLO1 Critically analyse the key strategic technical, legal and financial frameworks and theories underpinning construction development, procurement and management.
• MLO2: Critically appraise and evaluate the operational roles, practice and professional procedures used in the management and administration of development and construction projects.

• MLO3: Critically analyse information, identify solutions, demonstrate judgement and communicate findings.
• MLO4: Apply appropriate professional practices to complex contemporary development scenarios.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: tasks within the module sessions provide formative feedback to consolidate and enhance learning as you move through the module.

Summative assessment: this module is assessed by one piece of coursework

Coursework, accounts for 100% of the module mark. You will critically analyse the quantity surveying practice and management related theories, activities and scenarios to identify solutions, demonstrate judgement and communicate findings in the assessment. . (MLO1-5)

Module abstract

This module will develop your understanding of the knowledge underpinning the work of the professional quantity surveyor including: building and civil engineering measurement, procurement, and various aspects of commercial management and project management,. You will develop, throughout this module, academic and professional skills relating to the use and evaluation of data; effective communication; and self-direction and personal responsibility. Exposure throughout the module to real world practice will enhance the skills necessary for employment in this surveying discipline. It is delivered and supported via our eLP and through your interaction with the learning materials and independent research you will be able to identify, analyse and apply key principles and concepts essential to the professional practice of the quantity surveyor.
