What will I learn on this module?
In this module you will learn about how an engineering organisation operates financially, short term management of projects and longer term strategic planning to enable responsible financial stability. How an organisation may be created from intellectual property, fund both day-to-day operations and finance development projects for long term growth whilst operating as a socially responsible organisation.
You will learn how to evaluate information relating to the commercial, financial and strategic objectives of an engineering company, for example, through statuary, commercial, promotional and technical publications. Critical analysis will enable you to appraise the operation of the company against prevailing conditions within an engineering management context. You will design solutions to complex problems which balance societal, user, business and customer needs within a framework of legal, professional, ethical, risk management and security needs.
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be taught through activity-based learning in a lectorial format. Each topic will be introduced with a short lecture, which may often include some prior independent learning activity, which is then followed by classroom participation enquiry activities that develop the ideas that have been introduced in the short lecture, for example through data exercises, case studies etc. Classroom sessions will be collaborative and seek to extend learning through experiential decision making exercises and case study analysis.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
During your active learning sessions, academic support will be available to facilitate your exploration of the problem-solving activities. Formative feedback will be provided by the module team, including answering student queries and providing guidance concerning the module such as assessments and your academic progress. The electronic learning platform (eLP) provides a comprehensive resource for integrated learning incorporating learning materials and reading lists that will facilitate directed and self-directed learning. Contact with academic tutors and your peers outside formal teaching hours is encouraged through dedicated ‘office hours’, discussion boards and messaging systems within the eLP. Professional support staff, such as Ask4Help, provide the first point of contact for a range of queries, including, for example, those concerning assessment submission, late submission/extensions, and other administrative issues.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

• MLO1. Select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model complex problems in Engineering Finance, discussing the limitations of the techniques employed. (M3)
• MLO2 -Design solutions for complex problems that evidence some originality and meet a combination of societal, user, business and customer needs as appropriate. (M5)
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• MLO3 - Evaluate the environmental and societal impact of solutions to complex problems (to include the entire life-cycle of a product or process) and minimise adverse impacts (M7)
• MLO4 – Communicate effectively on complex engineering matters with technical and non-technical audiences, evaluating the effectiveness of the methods used (M17)
• MLO5 -Use a risk management process to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks (the effects of uncertainty) associated with a particular project or activity (M9)
How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment
Academic staff on the module will assess you in a formative manner to help build your confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical and professional concepts presented in the module. Your formative feedback will be given to you either verbally by academic staff on the module during formally scheduled teaching sessions or using the eLP. Your formative feedback aims to help you learn and prepare for the submission of your summative assessment.
Summative Assessment
Academic staff on the module will assess you in a summative manner by two pieces of assessment. Component 1, a coursework to assess your understanding of selected module learning outcomes (MLOs 1 and 3) through completing a written business context report (2500 words or equivalent) . Component 2, an engineering business case study coursework (3500 words or equivalent), is used to evaluate your ability to satisfy MLOs 2, 4 and 5.
