What will I learn on this module?

This module supports your management development and enhancement of strategic decision-making skills.


Specifically, the aim of the module is to advance your prior academic or professional knowledge base in evaluating and implementing suitable strategies which support

organisational development through the lenses of innovation and sustainability. Organisations in today’s highly dynamic and competitive environment capitalise on

competitive advantage opportunities by exploring sustainable strategic options which support their international reach. Contemporary but also traditional theoretical

frameworks are presented within the module to develop you as critical thinkers and future managers.


The module is designed around three thematic pillars: (i) strategic options in the new (post-Great Recession) economic and business environment; (iii) innovation; and (iii)

sustainability. The learning material used in the module is based on contemporary and seminal theories of strategic management, disruptive innovation and sustainability.

How will I learn on this module?

Recorded sessions and practical activities aim to introduce and evaluate contemporary but also well-accepted academic theories and business practices within an

interactive, student-led learning environment. Centric to the module’s learning approach is to build upon your prior business and management academic knowledge and

professional experience and develop your critical evaluation and thinking skills on strategic issues and opportunities presented to organisations operating within todays

dynamic and turbulent business environment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Each module session follows a similar structure of Learn, Explore Further and Apply. All learning materials and resources are accessible via our virtual learning

environment.


A range of approaches are adopted to accelerate your learning in this module.


During the first week of this module, you will receive information about the module and Teaching & Learning Plan.


The teaching and learning plan outlines the formal subject themes and signposts the tutor-directed study and student-led independent weekly activities. An interactive

approach to your development will draw upon the directed and independent learning undertaken and students’ academic and professional experience. Throughout,

emphasis will be on high levels of student participation, both individually and within small groups or teams (making use of technologies such as Blackboard Collaborate

and the module discussion board), this will be enabled with the use of virtual learning technologies. You should therefore expect to engage in a reflective-practitioner

learning approach, embedded in all online sessions. You will engage in the application of theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making strategic

recommendations for organisations.


Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the tutor-supported discussion board on the e-

learning platform.


Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and

understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc.


Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.


The approach to research informed teaching within the module is primarily centred on the emphasis of business research activities within the curriculum. Within the supporting learning material which provide the knowledge base for the module, a research-tutored approach will be adopted, whereby learning, as appropriate will involve you discussing research and critically engaging in research-based discussion, further supported by staff using contemporary work to contextualise the content within the module. Recorded sessions are made available to you. This allows you to access and digest the session materials post-session at your own pace, and review and revise the session material on a variety of platforms and devices. This module is supported with a site on the e-Learning Portal (Blackboard). This site stores your session materials, the session recordings and supplementary activity materials. The modules Online Reading List can be reached through the e-Learning Portal. This list provides you with a single comprehensive list of links from which to access all the module’s directed reading material.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding: MLO1: Understand the wider impact of individual or organisational decision making on social and environmental contexts. MLO2: Acquire, interpret and apply knowledge of international business, management and organisational functions.

How will I be assessed?

The module is summatively assessed by a single assignment, individually assessed: Individual assignment (4,000 words): a critical evaluation of theoretical frameworks supported by real-world examples on the topic of innovation and sustainability as a business model to deliver growth and international reach. The assessment covers MLO1 and MLO2. Constructive feedback to each student will be offered during the marking process.

Module abstract

The module has the aim to explore and evaluate three conceptual themes: (i) Business environment and strategic options, (ii) Innovation and (iii) Sustainability.


The module builds on your prior academic knowledge of business management and exposes you to the new economic and social environment and the evaluation of

sustainable strategic options promoting innovation and growth. Contemporary but also traditional developmental theoretical frameworks are presented within the module to

enable the development of you as a critical thinker and practitioner.


The module will be taught by a mixture of directed and independent learning activities. You will have the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts on real organisations

through both case studies and your own research. You will also be expected to participate in tutor-supported and student-led discussions, via media such as the module

discussion board and Blackboard Collaborate.


The module will be assessed by an individually submitted coursework designed to develop your knowledge and skill in theory evaluation and application.
