What will I learn on this module?
In this module you will gain a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurial and innovation concepts, theories and techniques of management. You will examine the nature of entrepreneurship and innovation, the typical characteristics of entrepreneurship, the generation of new business ideas and business failure. In particular, you will focus on corporate entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial architectures, being an entrepreneur, building an entrepreneurial culture and organisational structure, managing corporate ventures and intrapreneurship. You will also explore innovation particularly, the types of innovation, innovation management, technology transfer, public science and R&D.
How will I learn on this module?
This module is delivered through a combination of online resources, directed learning, group learning and independent learning. The taught sessions will adopt a variety of approaches to learning and teaching including tutor-led input to provide some theoretical underpinning, group exercises and discussions, and case study discussion. Your learning will be underpinned by a ‘research-rich’ approach.
Selected pre-readings and activities will be made available prior to each of the taught sessions, providing the intellectual underpinning and case study information needed for the session activities. In addition, each module will be supported by online resources and through the module’s e-learning platform all module material, seminar material and other learning resources will be available to support your independent learning.
Importantly, you will also learn at work, through reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. During the workshops you will be encouraged to discuss the theories and concepts with the tutors and your peers to understand how these relate to your own work-based experiences. The module will provide directed activities to enable you to transfer the learning into your workplace and provide an opportunity for you to apply and evidence the development of your own professional practice. Finally, there will be an opportunity for you to reflect and review your learning with your workplace mentor and executive coach.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will have access to a variety of learning materials that will be available through the module’s e-learning platform. You will have additional learning support through collated materials from consultancy, government and think thank reports on entrepreneurship and innovation. You will also be provided with electronic reading lists for each theme that draws on theoretical and practice journal articles that will provide you with the conceptual and applied understanding of the various facets of entrepreneurship and innovation at a firm level. These reading materials will include journal articles, book chapters, case studies and relevant newspaper articles. Additionally, you will be provided with ongoing support and guidance by the module teaching team in the taught sessions.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role, relevance and importance of entrepreneurship and innovation at a firm level;
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the meso and micro foundation of entrepreneurship and innovation within firms;
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of how entrepreneurial eco-systems supports entrepreneurship and innovation.

4. Conduct critical analyses applying theoretical concepts to real world contexts, and present findings.

How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment: In each of the taught sessions you will complete a range of exercises and activities and take part in a number of presentations and debates. Formative feedback will be provided by your tutors and your peers during taught sessions and this feedback will assist you in developing the necessary knowledge and understanding and personal skills to enhance your performance on the module.
Summative assessment: The summative assessment for this module is made up of one assignment.
Assignment: A 3500 word individual case based assignment which includes a critical and reflective view on innovation or entrepreneurship in a selected organisation which assesses module learning outcomes 1-5 and is weighted at 100%.

Module abstract
This module will provide you with theoretical and applied perspective about entrepreneurship and innovation at the firm level by focusing on understanding the entrepreneur and innovator, the entrepreneurial and innovation processes, corporate entrepreneurship and types of innovation. The module will focus on emerging entrepreneurship and innovation issues such as business failure, management innovation, open innovation and scientific based entrepreneurship. You will undertake an assessment where you will have an opportunity to understand the real challenges of entrepreneurship and innovation for firms. Your learning will be supported by a wide variety of learning material drawn from academic, policy and practice sources nationally and internationally. This material will help you develop a clear understanding of the core theoretical concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship and how it applies in practice in different organisational settings. This combination will deepen your knowledge and expertise of innovation and entrepreneurship, further your effectuating capacity as a manager in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship within your own organisational context.
