What will I learn on this module?
GD6013 develops your specialist design skills towards advancing your own creative practice as a globally focused designer. It is structured around you using your personal global perspective that you developed in DE1213 to create a self-defined design project. By doing this you will learn the importance of your critical thinking as a designer to understand the socio-cultural context of a design problem, as well as the target audience that your final design outcomes must benefit. By actively engaging in research-through-design in your design project, you will reveal any specific considerations that you will need to address in your design project. This research will enrich the design solutions you develop for your design problem. It will involve secondary research activities from academic and popular literature sources to support your design decisions. This may lead you to enter into a primary research and a co-design relationship with your target audience, to develop effective design solutions for them. You will proactively follow a structured design process from writing your own design brief, through ideation, development and final design phases. At each of these points a milestone mini-deadline will be set, which will help you learn how to manage your time. You will also use a dedicated social media platform(s) as a tool for self-reflective practice, and to ethically network with professional designers and future employers globally. By disseminating each step of your design process for peer feedback you learn to improve your creative practice.
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be delivered through the School of Design’s extended studio approach (X-Studio) that embraces physical studios as well as our virtual spaces and the wider world to create a flexible and rich environment that is responsive to our learners’ needs.
It will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, group work, one to one sessions and independent study. You will develop your experiential learning of producing design work from concept to deliverable, through proactive engagement with professional designers and potential employers globally through utilising social media for promotional purposes. The module will begin with regular contact with your Northumbria tutor through a series of lectures and seminars, after which you will complete the course work through independent study, supported by regular video-link contact with your Northumbria tutor. In doing so you will manage your own time and responsibility in completing the assignments on time to a level of quality and rigour appropriate to a final year BA (Hons) student.
NOTE: During times of limited/no travel during the Covid-19 pandemic, the delivery will be non-physical in that there will be no specialist staff visits to Binus, however in the event of travel restrictions being lifted, it will be anticipated that the 3-week physical visits will be re-established.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Throughout this module your Northumbria tutor will support you in your development of your own personal design practice. Initially for the first three weeks this support to help you define a design problem in a global context, will be face-to-face lectures, seminars, group work at your university. Your tutor will provide advice and support in relation to applying your global design perspective to solving a design problem for a target audience. After this period you will continue your learning independently, with regular formal guidance tutorials via email, electronic learning platform (eLP) and video-link tutorials, and through peer networking and self-reflective social media posts of your project‘s design process. Through proactive networking via a project-dedicated use of social media, your reflective posts could garner mentoring feedback on the development of your project’s design process from external design professionals. This contact and feedback will allow you to identify, reflect on, and improve your strengths and weaknesses. This academic support will be provided in the following ways:
• Through lectures, seminars and group work you will individually understand how to improve your understanding of the importance of research-through-design as part of your professional creative practice. The slides from these sessions will be provided digitally via the module’s eLP. You will also be provided with remote access to Northumbria University’s library, where research literature may be accessed digitally.
• Within peer discussions and short presentations during your seminars at your university you will develop your self-reflective practitioner skills and critical analysis. These confidence-building exercises in class will help you to ethically employ social media as a promotional and networking commercial tool, to drive business, commerce and employability on a global level.
• By engaging in class in defining your own brief to contextualise your emergent Global Design Perspective in a design project, you will develop your critical analysis to deliver effective design solutions for a global target audience based on sound research. This analysis will be disseminated in your project development work via social media to peers, demonstrating your self-reflection of how your design solution develops over time.
• With regular tutorial support with your Northumbria tutor via email and/or video-link tutorials you can proactively demonstrate your ability to research, develop and to demonstrate your ability to research, develop and create 2D and 3D design solutions set within the context of advancing your own design practice.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• Engage in appropriate research to inform your design solution to the chosen design problem, which addresses the needs of the target audience. (LO1)
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• Demonstrate an ability to produce professionally orientated design solutions directed at a specific target audience, which evidence experimental and/or innovative thinking to advance your specialist creative practice. (LO2)
• Engage in resourceful dissemination of design process using peer networking via social media to develop employability and self-promotional skills. (LO3)
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Articulate the advancement of your specialist creative practice, evidenced through online self-reflection and critical analysis of your design process via ethical use of social media. (LO4)
How will I be assessed?
Formative Feedback
Throughout this module your progress will be guided through regular tutorials of your on-going research-through-design work. This is a standard design feedback technique that encourages analysis and critical thinking in you. At the beginning of the module, these feedback sessions will occur weekly and will continue on a one-to-one basis through regular online video-link tutorials during the remainder of the module.
Summative Assessment
The weighting of the marks within the submission will be 60% for your submitted self-defined design project within your specialist discipline, and 40% for submitted evidence from your project-dedicated social media activity of your proactive networking, mentoring and reflective practice throughout the project’s duration. Module abstract
This module develops your specialist design skills towards realising your potential as a globally focused designer. You will build upon and apply your personal global perspective through a self-defined practical creative project on a design problem. You will scope out this problem and employ suitable research methodologies to inform your 2D or 3D design outcomes. Throughout this module your progress will be guided through regular tutorials of your on-going research-through-design work. You will submit a self-defined design solutions within your specialist discipline, and evidence from your project-dedicated social media activity of your proactive networking, mentoring and reflective practice throughout the project’s duration. Once assessed you will receive written feedback with a breakdown of how successful each component was.
