What will I learn on this module?

Fashion Futures is a 40 credit module in which you will use the skills you acquired during your Industrial Placement year to investigate the more challenging aspects of fashion product and promotion concepts; researching and analysing consumer trends that will affect design direction and future markets. You will apply this knowledge to your research, developing your ideas and employing an aesthetic and intellectual approach to creating and promoting contemporary fashion design solutions. In your studio-based practice you will learn advanced technical skills to enable you to produce professional 2D and 3D fashion design product solutions underpinned by cultural and ethical awareness, and creative versus commercial viability.

You will work to advance your technical skills in pattern cutting, moulage, garment construction, illustration, styling photography typography and graphic layout. In this module you will be able to focus on areas of design such as menswear, womenswear, sportswear, lingerie, or trend publications to create innovative, contemporary fashion garments or products. You may have the opportunity to work on live projects with industry, both as part of a team and individually, gaining experience of managing research, design development and promotional briefs with a professional and confident approach to presentation. Your ability to interpret contemporary media will play an important role in the promotion of your product. This learning will be take place in the studios, workshops and VLE environments.

This Fashion Futures module is designed to give you the knowledge and understanding to support decision-making with regards to your individual direction of study in Level 6.

How will I learn on this module?

Northumbria X-Studio (Extended Studio):

Learning and teaching strategies on Fashion Design & Marketing encourage you to acquire a flexible and imaginative approach to creative problem solving through enquiry-based learning. You will become an active participant in your learning, integrating creative practice with academic and intellectual skills.

The School of Design operates an extended studio approach (X-Studio) that embraces our physical studios and making workshops as well as our virtual spaces to create a flexible and rich environment that is responsive to our learners’ needs.

This dedicated approach has been developed over many years of continuous teaching innovation, research and industry collaboration. It has created a supportive extended studio culture that encourages our students to learn flexibly, dynamically blending their learning and University experience between physical and digital interactions both in real-time and online at their own pace.

We believe that this extended studio culture not only helps our students to become more confident autonomous learners but also prepares them for a dynamic design industry in which an extended studio philosophy is current practice.

In Fashion Futures you will learn through theoretical and practical activities that take place in fashion design studios and workshops. You will be encouraged to apply a curious and imaginative approach to projects, expand your research skills to develop creative concepts, explore your ideas and advance your technical skills. Where possible, live fashion industry briefs will be initiated.
You will learn through;
? Lectures, independent learning and practical workshops led by tutors, technicians and industry practitioners.
? Through applicable research methodologies, you will continue to develop your own practice from a theoretical knowledge of the fashion design and wider industries, and to further your awareness of current issues and debates.
? A collegiate environment is actively encouraged, working collaboratively, discussing ideas with peers and staff and undertaking both group and individual projects.
? Individual guidance is given during studio sessions and you will undertake independent research work to broaden your knowledge of theory and practice. This type of experiential activity engages you in self-initiated research, encouraging independent judgement and critical self-awareness.
? You will use your Creative Process Journal (CPJ), not only to demonstrate the development of your creative work, but also as a vehicle to build and reflect on your personal and educational development. This also involves clearly identifying your goals and planning the steps you need?to take to accomplish them.
? You will be asked to self-assess your work at submission as part of your acknowledgment of current learning as well as identifying future learning needs.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported in your learning in this module through studio and sewing workshop activities, lectures, group and individual tutorials.

Timetabled studio sessions provide the opportunity for you to receive on-going tutor and peer feedback and to use the opinions of others in the development and enhancement of your work.

Tutor Guided Independent Learning time will help you to use the feedback received in class to further your studies, and to take responsibility to direct your own learning needs. This tutor-directed independent learning will reduce as you progress through Level 5 to support your transition to autonomous learning in Level 6.

Formative assessment points in the module promote personal responsibility in managing your workload. This also provides you with the opportunity to apply feedback and improve your competencies before your final summative assessment.
Northumbria University student support also includes;
? If you are an International student, you will receive extra support via weekly ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purposes) sessions through specialist English Language teaching.
? SASC (Student Advice & Support Centre) provide specialist support with personal issues including; DSSR (Disabled Student Support Recommendations) statements; PECs (Personal Extenuating Circumstances) and LAs (Late Approved submission) processes. They will also be able to refer you to the correct service if they cannot help you directly.
? The eLP (eLearning Portal) will include all relevant module documentation e.g. module guides, lecture material, video-captures and reading lists and any notices relevant to the running of the module.
? IT Helpline, Timetabling, Ask4help, Student Law Office, Careers and Employment Service and the University Library.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Recognise how knowledge is created, advanced and renewed, and demonstrate your understanding through research evidenced in the CPJ.

8. Apply detailed knowledge of materials, skills and processes of fashion design in the realisation of a professionally finished 2D or 3D product

9. Understand the relationship between creative and commercial requirements through the 2D or 3D design process.


Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Display evidence of critical thinking by conceiving, progressing, evaluating and communicating potential creative solutions to fashion design brief through research and developmental work in the CPJ.

8. Produce and communicate Fashion artefact or creative solution with distinguishable skill, application and presentation.


Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

2. Evaluate your own progress, exercise an enhanced level of self-criticism and analysis in respect of Fashion design outcome.

4. Operate effectively within group or team; apply decision-making and negotiation skills to produce successful collaborative projects.

How will I be assessed?

Your Fashion Futures module is 100% of the with summative assessment, that addresses all 7 MLOs.

There will be 2 formal formative assessment points at weeks 5 and 10 where you will be given verbal feedback and a letter grade to indicate the level at which you are currently achieving the MLOs. This provides you with the opportunity to apply the feedback to your existing work and improve your competencies before your final summative assessment.


Final summative assessment 100% of mark which may include project work such as:

• Creative Process Journal
• Professionally designed and finished contemporary garment/s or Fashion Graphic Trend Publication
• Professional presentation of group project
• Professional presentation of individual project
• Portfolio sheets
• Promotional product
