What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will explore concepts of interprofessional working in health, social care, and education. This module explores the various roles of professionals, semi-professionals, and non-professionals, including roles and responsibilities and working across multiple services and roles. You will explore the key influences that affect the provision and delivery of these services in UK contemporary society. This module also explores the role of multi-agency/disciplinary working, using real life situations to highlight the strengths and limitations of partnership working. You will be supported to explore the holistic needs of a service user and concepts such as personalisation, empowerment, effective communication, equality and diversity, legislation in the context of practice. You will reflect upon your own personal experiences and personal values when considering the role and impact of professionals within society.

How will I learn on this module?

Within this module there will be a variety of learning and teaching strategies used to support you to consider your experience(s) of health, social care, and education considering existing evidence and theory. This will include a combined traditional teaching and learning strategy with technology driven methods, which will involve lectures, supplemented by discussion, independent learning, and group work that will be student centred and student led. Lectures, discussion and individual and group reflective exercises will be used to introduce concepts, reflect on personal (and where appropriate) practice experience and to develop relationships between concepts and experience. Guidelines and specific exercises will provide to structure reflection, discussion and learning during group work periods. Material from individual or group work will be used within whole group discussions, but the main purpose is to provide an opportunity for you to think about the relationship between current knowledge, attitudes and ideas generated within the module and professional practice. Seminars and discussion groups to help integration and synthesis of the subject area. Various audio-visual aids and case studies will also be used, as well as a range of IT resources during designated laboratory work sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will have a named Personal Tutor, who will provide help and advice at every stage of the programme. The module leader will provide guidance on the content of the module during formal teaching time, and throughout the academic year time will set aside on a regular basis for individual and small group tutorial support should you wish to access this. You will also be provided with the contact details of key module personnel within the module handbook and on the e-learning platform. Lecturers will facilitate seminar groups to support academic development. You will have access to lecturers at specifically designated times via online forums; email; group tutorials and one to one meetings. Formative and summative assessment tasks include ‘feedforward’ in preparation for assignments, and ‘feedback’ to identify aspects of students’ strengths and aspects which require development. What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Examine contemporary societal and ethical debates regarding professions and professional practice by engaging with current literature and evidence base.

2. Explore the nature and application of professional ‘knowledge’ and its influence on contemporary professional and personal practice including personal and professional role development and the continuing evolution of professional roles.

3. Explore differing professional frameworks and their relevance to contemporary collaborative practice within a local, national, and global context, including concepts and challenges of professional, inter-professional and multi-professional working.

4. Continue to develop the academic skills, qualities and competencies expected of students on the programme, including effective approaches to assessment, academic and information literacy and reflection on values, attitudes and assumptions; and how to use appropriate resources expertise on offer within and beyond the programme to support learning.

5. Develop an awareness and understanding of issues relating to the complexity of professional practice by exploring contemporary debates around research and other sources of evidence.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:
You will be formatively assessed by means of an ongoing sequence of student lead seminars and debates, which will be diagnostic in direction, offering guidance toward completion of the summative assignment.

Overall formative feedback will be during designated feedback sessions, and where necessary students will be seen individually to discuss issues of concern. Advice will be given on how to improve writing and referencing skills throughout the module.

Summative Assessment:
1000-word written assessment examining an agreed single ethical issue which may impact upon an identified professional/occupational group/role. (MLO 1-5)

Module abstract

This module will help you to explore interprofessional working in health, social care, and education by exploring the multiple roles of professionals, semi-professionals, and non-professionals. You will explore important influences that affect the provision and delivery of these services in society. You will be asked to consider professional roles and multi-disciplinary settings and whilst the module team will assume no academic background knowledge in this field of study, you will be encouraged to draw upon both past reading and life experience as part of your learning. You will explore concepts such as personalisation, empowerment, effective communication, equality and diversity and legislation. You will reflect upon your own personal experiences and personal values when considering the role and impact of professionals within society. By the end of the module, you will have developed your understanding of the role of the professional and how differing views of society may impact upon the roles and functions of professions.
