SP3012 - Sport, Exercise and Performance

What will I learn on this module?

Sport and exercise scientists use their wide-ranging knowledge and expertise to support individuals participating in sport and exercise settings. ‘Sport, Exercise and Performance’ will give you an insight into the real-world application of sport and exercise science. You will learn about the core disciplines of physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and psychology, and how sport and exercise scientists use the combination of these approaches in their work. On this module, you will gain theoretical knowledge as well as developing your practical laboratory skills in Northumbria’s state of the art, BASES accredited laboratories, an exciting and stimulating place to learn.

How will I learn on this module?

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats (such as lectures, laboratory practical, seminars/tutorials and directed learning), and you will be able to access materials on the eLP. Each week you will receive a lecture, providing a theoretical overview of the weekly content. A laboratory practical or tutor supported seminar will follow, which will provide you with hands on experience of the taught theoretical material delivered in the lecture and an opportunity to engage more interactively with the theoretical content delivered in the lecture. There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP module site. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There are also further academic skills support available from the University Library services where you can gain access to study skills / academic writing and support materials, as well as links to booking both on and off campus study skills sessions.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Identify and describe psychological, nutritional, physiological and biomechanical considerations related to various sport and exercise modules.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

2. Develop techniques of logical thinking and academic skills necessary to discuss and analyse sport-based issues.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

3. Demonstrate a curiosity and understanding of relevant research to support sports-based issues.

How will I be assessed?

This will be a one-point assessment worth 100% (MLO’s 1, 2 & 3)

Students will conduct a group presentation which will require them to discuss sport and exercise science theory in relation to a real-life situation. The marking will be split into two components (50% group component and 50% individual component). The group mark will relate to the overall cohesiveness of the presentation, and students will present a sub-section of the presentation to be assessed individually.

Students will receive individual electronic feedback on the presentation through the eLP site.

Formative feedback will form a large part of students directed learning and will be given on a continuing basis providing them with all the information they would need to prepare for the assessment. Relevant activities will take place in taught sessions, which will enable students to gain feedback and reflect upon their knowledge and understanding. An additional session will be provided to support the summative assessment.

Module abstract

As a sport and exercise scientist it is important to understand the different aspects of sport and exercise participation and how these can impact on each other. ‘Sport, Exercise and Performance’ will give you an insight into how knowledge of underpinning physiology, nutrition and psychology can be used in a multi-disciplinary fashion to support individuals participating in various sport and exercise contexts. You will conduct practical laboratory sessions in Northumbria’s state of the art, BASES accredited laboratories, an exciting and stimulating place to develop your practical skills. You will learn about key aspects of physiology, nutrition, psychology and biomechanics in a series of themed blocks so you can see how the concepts come together to explain different aspects of sport and exercise participation.
