What will I learn on this module?
On this module, you will build, and evidence the broad range of academic, professional and transferable employability skills you have developed through your Foundation Year. These will include short demonstrations of cogent academic prose, accurate academic citation, research skills, independent learning. Assessment foregrounds oral presentation and teamwork. You will develop skills throughout the semester, drawing evidence from workshops, lectures and seminars from this first semester module.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn on the module through a stimulating range of lectures, seminars and workshops. Your learning will build your core academic skills through formative exploration individually and in groups to support you as a student in Fine Art, Drama and Animation. Sessions will be delivered by the module team to ensure you benefit from their particular expertise across a range of disciplines. You will develop academic and professional skills, evidenced from a range of the work you undertake across your Foundation Year.
By attending the lectures and seminars and undertaking the assignments, you will be able to achieve the module learning outcomes. You will develop foundational knowledge in research skills, time management, IT skills, critical thinking and evaluation as well as academic communication skills, particularly formal oral communication.
In addition to learning during contact hours with the module tutors, you will undertake the directed learning of the preparatory activities as well as independent learning. Independent learning generally will take the form of further reading and research, the consolidation of session materials and the completion of the assessment.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module handbook provides details of sessions, reading lists and assessment criteria. Lecture learning materials are made available on the e-learning portal. The module tutors will be available in taught sessions, as well as in feedback and consultation hours and by email, to discuss any queries or concerns you have about how to excel academically on the module. Moreover, feedback on formative work and the first summative assessments will also serve as ‘feed forward’, giving guidance on how to improve during the module. In addition, you have a designated Personal Guidance Tutor throughout the entire duration of your programme. The academic side of the Personal Guidance Tutor’s role includes:
• monitoring your ongoing academic progress
• helping you to develop self-reflection skills necessary for continuous academic development
• directing you to further available services which can help them with their academic skills (e.g. Library’s Skills Plus)
You are advised to see your Personal Guidance Tutor at least twice each semester to review your academic progress.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

2 Basic academic skills of written prose and citation. Oral presentation and independent research are assessed as primary elements of the assessment with citation and written text subsidiary and supporting the presentation.

4 Demonstrate the capacity for sustained independent work.
How will I be assessed?
Formative:
Each semester you will meet with the module tutor to review the progress of your assignment tasks, and discuss further development. This will include individual feedback on how to improve your work and satisfy the assessment criteria. (MLO 1-4)
You will produce:
Reflective writing and Review of Artwork (MLO 1 and 3) formative.
Summative:
You will produce:
Group presentation including evidence of research material (MLO 2, 3 and 4) summative
These formative and summative assessments will allow you to demonstrate the core basic academic, professional and transferable employability skills you have acquired in the first university semester. This will include skills of writing in different styles appropriate to university setting, such as critical and reflective writing, introduction to academic citation and referencing (MLO2); independent research, oral presentation individually and in groups, and teamwork. Your presentation may be delivered as a live or online activity. (MLO 3)

Module abstract
This semester 1 module enables you to start to build a broad range of academic, research and transferable employability skills. These include academic writing and research, presentation, and teamwork. The module is designed to compliment the arts practices in your other modules, and will draw on activities in lectures, seminars and specific workshops about building skills to thrive and succeed at university. Specialist arts staff will guide your knowledge and understanding of the requirements of being a university student. Learning technologies will support your studies and you will be guided to use the university library resources. You will develop your academic and research l skills through the module activities and assignment tasks, complementing the range of the work you undertake across your Foundation Year.
