TE7083 - Reflective Approaches to Teaching and Learning

What will I learn on this module?

This module is intended to give students who are either professionals working within education or those who are intending to work in education an opportunity to develop their knowledge of both pedagogy and andragogy. The module will take you on a journey through the ideology that shapes the way in which education is both defined and organised and the theoretical dissonance between theories of learning and formal education. The focus is broad as you are encouraged to consider all aspects of teaching and learning in the statutory, further/higher and lifelong learning sectors.

How will I learn on this module?

Teaching and learning in this module will include a wide variety of strategies to ensure that you have a wide variety of experience. A combination of lectures and seminars will provide you with the theoretical anecdotal and case study material from which to build discussion and debate.
Opportunities to share and explore experiences and learning with fellow students will form an important part of the teaching and learning strategies in this module, in particular small group learning, presentations, independent study and guided study. The use of online learning resources and group tutorials, together with a range of practical activities are introduced and used to reinforce the learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition, tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically engage with and reflect upon the different approaches to learning and teaching
2. Demonstrate understanding of a range of contrasting perspectives about the role of teaching and learning within the educational system.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. Critically analyse different theoretical frameworks.
2. Critically evaluate approaches, based on the best available evidence and research.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. Enhance your communication skills through formative assessments and your summative written work.

2. Enhance your skills of critical reflection and problem solving through the summative assessment task.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
Presentation identifying an aspect of teaching and learning and provide relevant key texts and appropriate reflective models.

Verbal peer and tutor feedback

Summative Assessment
The summative assessment will be a 4,500-word assignment which reflects and evaluating your chosen focus in relation to practice.
