What will I learn on this module?

You will learn to apply for a 12 month placement in a construction engineering company. You will do this through developing and improving your skills in the following areas:

1. Communication
2. CVs
3. Interviews
4. H&S within the workplace
5. Professional conduct
6. Teams
7. Constructing a Learning Plan
8. Evidencing your learning
9. Reflection in the workplace
10. Networking

How will I learn on this module?

You will be guided to sources of knowledge and skills development through lectures form your tutors and guests and through discussion about your progress with peers and the tutors.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The tutors will provide you with guidance to allow you to access sources of knowledge and skill development and this will be tested through discussion with your tutors and your peers.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

You will be expected to be able to:

1. Have knowledge and understanding of good interview practices
2. Have knowledge of H & S within the work environment, consolidating Duty of Care responsibilities, regulations and obligations.

3. Produce a professional application for a placement opportunity with a civil engineering organisation.

How will I be assessed?

The measure of your success will be through the successful achievement of a placement should you wish to apply for one. Alternatively these skills will support your future applications for employment. MLO are not directly applicable.

Module abstract

The aim of this module is to facilitate the student experience for those participating in a work-based placement opportunity. Lectures will offer a vehicle for the dissemination of module information after which students will be encouraged to pursue their own knowledge acquisition through questioning and discussion with the tutors and other students. Industrial contacts will be invited into the university to speak to the students and share their workplace opportunities.
