What will I learn on this module?
You will engage with the key issues around inclusion and inclusive practice, specifically in terms of the marginalisation of children and their families, who are representative of minority groups, and the role of professionals who support such families.
You will explore topics such as the meaning of inclusion, integration and exclusion specifically in the context of age, gender/sexuality, impairment, poverty, economic capital, ethnicity and culture. You will also explore issues such as language, labelling and stereotyping and consider the potential benefits of labels in identification of need, risk and resilience factors. Furthermore you will examine state and organisational responsibility through legislation and policy agenda. Critically when studying this module you will engage in the process of reflective practice in support of inclusion.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a variety of teaching & learning strategies to ensure that you have a wide variety of experience. A combination of lectures and seminar methodologies will provide you with theoretical and case study material from which to build discussion and debate. Opportunities to explore and share experiences with your fellow students will form an important part of teaching and learning strategies in this module, in particular you will participate in some small group learning, presentations, independent study, guided study.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Your academic learning will be supported by module staff through a programme of lectures that relate to the learning outcomes. Lecturers will facilitate group discussion and debate both on campus in seminars and through the online discussion board. You will have support in advance of assessment in tutorial groups. Contact details for module tutors will be available in module handbooks and on the Electronic Learning Portal (elp).
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

1. Distinguish between inclusion, integration and exclusion
2. Relate policy to individual rights and professional and organisational responsibilities
3. Contrast individual needs with resources and strategies to facilitate inclusion
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. Compare and analyse critically the nature of different educational settings
5. Draw upon a wide range of authoritative and appropriate material to debate the issues around inclusion and inclusive practice
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
6. Appraise the relationship between reflection, research and inclusive practice
How will I be assessed?
The summative assessment will be in the form of a 3000 word essay which requires you to distinguish between inclusion, integration and exclusion through analysing critically the inclusivity of an environment/organisation/policy that supports the needs of children. The essay will relate to relevant literature around policy, inclusion and citizenship and link to the learning outcomes. (MLOs 1,2,3,4,5,6)
Additional formative assessment – detail of process and rationale
Group discussion and debate will provide opportunities for you to apply your knowledge of models and support you to test concepts of inclusion and formulate your thinking, it will also provide the basis for continuing formative assessment and link to learning outcomes
