Our Alumni - Work For Us
What will I learn on this module?
Your learning on this module will be centred on its three themes;
• Heterocyclic chemistry; you will learn about the synthesis, properties, chemical reactivities and applications of heterocycles.
• Bioconjugate chemistry; you will learn about the applications of bioconjugate and biorthogonal chemistry in bioimaging and therapeutics
• Green chemistry; you will learn about the design, principles and applications of green chemical processes.
The basis of this learning will be centred on the study and critical appraisal of modern research texts and articles in the three sub topics. You will learn to extract and critique key aspects of the material and develop your communication and professional skills by presenting and discussing your findings and proposals to the student cohort in both verbal and written formats.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through lectures, seminars, workshops and your own guided and independent study. You will also have the opportunity to summarise your own guided study by in-class presentations. Classes will enrich your learning experience by allowing you to engage with material presented by your fellow students as well as by academic staff.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by both formal and informal feedback from tutors during seminars and workshops. In addition, tutors will be available for consultations and feedback throughout the module, by email, telephone and/or face to face discussions as appropriate. General support that would benefit the whole class will be provided by eLP announcements and emails.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. In-depth knowledge of heterocycles, including their synthesis, chemical, physical and biological properties
2. In-depth knowledge of bioconjugation, major types of conjugates and their components, best strategies and designs.3. In-depth knowledge of green chemistry , including the principles of green chemistry, applications of these principles and enzyme chemistry.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. You will have the opportunity to hone your communication skills to a high standard through a series of oral and written assignments.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. You will develop an appreciation of the fascinating and subtle nature of modern chemistry which will stimulate both your curiosity and your awareness of chemistry as a key enabling science for 21st century society.
How will I be assessed?
You will be given formative assessment and feedback throughout the module, via your contributions to seminars. Staff will also be available to provide feedback on any aspects of your work that you wish to consult them on.
There are two summative assessments;
• Components 1 and 2 (2 x 35%) will be a viva voce oral examination at the end of both semester 1 and 2. These will test your subject knowledge, understanding and communication skills in all three of the module’s topics according to MLO’s 1, 2, 3 and 4. You will be provided with written feedback on your performance within the normal timeframe.
• Component 3 (30%) will take the form of a written assignment (research project proposal), submitted electronically. This will address MLO’s 4 and 5, plus 1, 2 or 3 depending on your choice of topic. Feedback on your performance will be provided by the return of a marked copy of your assignment.

Module abstract
This module’s three subject areas of heterocycles, bioconjugation and green chemistry have been selected because taken together, they link into almost every area of contemporary chemistry, from medicinal and biological chemistry to synthetic design and methodology. Because of their wealth of fascinating chemistry and intellectually challenging problems, these areas have attracted the research interests of many of the best chemists worldwide. Hence, not only will you enjoy learning some of the most interesting contemporary chemistry, you will also be able to read and discuss research articles written by many of the best scientists of our time. The breadth and depth of chemical knowledge that you will gain will be attractive to employers. The module has been designed to help you develop your own communication skills as well as an appreciation of the ways in which high impact research is conceived, planned and carried out.
