This programme consists of two modules that provide you with an opportunity to explore public involvement and co-production in research. The programme is recognised and valued as the only accredited one of its kind in the UK.

On the programme you will develop knowledge underpinning both research practice and theory, including the purpose, design, methodologies, dissemination and impact of research. Most importantly you will be encouraged to consider how research can be co-produced by members of the public and used to promote marginalised groups. You will develop your own network of contacts working within research and discuss the potential development of research projects from your own interests.

The two modules provide you with the opportunity to shape your learning around your personal lived experience. You will explore how research might help you understand and share your experiences. This will also help you to understand how ‘Patient and Public Involvement / Engagement’ (PPI/E) or ‘Patient Involvement and Community Engagement’ (PICE) shapes and governs a study through its lifespan from conception to dissemination. It is intended that you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be a positive agent for change in research. It is intended that you’re our own experience on the programme will be key and transformational both personally and professionally. Feedback from graduates of the first module has highlighted confidence building as one of its major strengths.

Each module is delivered as part of continuous professional development (CPD). By successfully completing the optional assessment for both modules (PP0435 and PP0436), you can achieve a Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE) worth 60 credits at level 4. It is intended that the programme will develop additional modules over time, offering opportunities to gain further skills, credits and qualifications.

To support you to apply your learning, through each module students will have opportunities to work with researchers.

Modules

Module information is indicative and is reviewed annually therefore may be subject to change. Applicants will be informed if there are any changes.

PP0435 -

Public Involvement and Co-Production in Research (Core,20 Credits)

The purpose of this module is to enable you to understand and explore the purpose, design, production and dissemination of research. You will also have an opportunity to consider how research may be co-produced by members of the public and be used to promote marginalized groups and increase inclusive practice. To achieve this, you will learn about contrasting methodologies, methods, analysis and possible impacts of research. It is hoped that from this you will be supported to play an active and authentic role in future research projects and be able to be critical of existing ones.

PP0436 -

Building on Public Involvement and Co-Production in Research (Core,40 Credits)

Building upon the first module in this programme Public Involvement and Co-production in Research (PP0435), this module will enable you to utilise and expand your existing understanding of the purpose, design, production and dissemination of research. You will have an opportunity to further consider how research may be co-produced by members of the public and be used to promote marginalised groups and increase inclusive practice, particularly in your area of interest. You will also develop an understanding of the various roles where Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPI/E) and Public Involvement and Community Engagement (PICE) influences, governs, and shapes research/impact, developing associated skills and having opportunities to link with researchers and existing PPI/E structures. This will include aspects of bidding for funding, ethics and the critical review research findings. It is proposed that to make real change for people with lived experience there is a need to understand and develop research in a culturally sensitive and systematic way.

With guidance from your module tutor, and linked to your personal interests, you will create a portfolio of work around developing PPI/PICE. This will include a PPI/PICE plan, a lay summary and presentation. These will demonstrate an understanding of how ‘involvement’ is developed, run, and evaluated within studies. It is intended that from this you will be supported to play an active and authentic role in future research projects and be able to review existing ones.

Accessibility and Student Inclusion

Northumbria University is committed to developing an inclusive, diverse and accessible campus and wider University community and are determined to ensure that opportunities we provide are open to all.

We are proud to work in partnership with AccessAble to provide Detailed Access Guides to our buildings and facilities across our City, Coach Lane and London Campuses. A Detailed Access Guide lets you know what access will be like when you visit somewhere. It looks at the route you will use getting in and what is available inside. All guides have Accessibility Symbols that give you a quick overview of what is available, and photographs to show you what to expect. The guides are produced by trained surveyors who visit our campuses annually to ensure you have trusted and accurate information.

You can use Northumbria’s AccessAble Guides anytime to check the accessibility of a building or facility and to plan your routes and journeys. Search by location, building or accessibility feature to find the information you need.

We are dedicated to helping students who may require additional support during their student journey and offer 1-1 advice and guidance appropriate to individual requirements. If you feel you may need additional support you can find out more about what we offer here where you can also contact us with any questions you may have:
