SP6052 - Managing Sport Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Sustainability

What will I learn on this module?

This module will enable you to develop a critical understanding of real-world issues concerning equity, inclusion, diversity and sustainability

across a broad range of sport and contexts. Topics will include (but are not limited to) gender inequality, institutional racism, disability,

sexuality and athlete activism. This module will provide an opportunity to discuss, debate and challenge your own and others’ biases and

assumptions relating to sport and workplace contexts. You will gain an understanding of the impact of these complex issues on professional

practice and individual wellbeing in sport organisations and will work on developing creative solutions that can be applied in practice, to

address these problems.

How will I learn on this module?

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, and you will be able to access materials on the eLP. There will be

the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. In

weekly sessions with tutors and in students’ own learning time, students will be provided with real-world sport industry case studies and

problems seeking resolution as per the themes of each week. Students are encouraged to develop their own understanding and learning with

the support of materials offered and by actively seeking relevant materials to the weekly themes to bring to classroom discussion. Students

will be asked to apply ideas from these weekly reading for class debate and make connections between their reading and potential

resolutions to topical issues. At this level (and so as to prepare students for their summative assessment), tutors will take a facilitatory, rather

than tutor-led approach.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP.

Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks

during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The

Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial

time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the

opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help

you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during

a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services. Additionally, staff will actively encourage

and implement opportunities for regular peer-peer support such as smaller working groups to allow students time and opportunity to

familiarise themselves with small-group working appropriate to their summative assessment. Staff will also encourage students to use

platforms for sharing ideas and reflections and materials such as Sharepoint, Teams and BB Collaborate.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding: 1. Critically apply empirical and theoretical knowledge to demonstrate understanding of equity, inclusion, diversity and sustainability 2. Critically evaluate current issues that restrict equity, inclusion, diversity and sustainability in sport and workplace contexts and offer solutions to these complex issues Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities: 3. Implement appropriate communication strategies to meet the needs of diverse audiences Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA): 4. Be able to reflect critically on your own and others’ biases and assumptions and suggest ways of challenging these in sport and managerial contexts

How will I be assessed?

Summative: Component 1 will be a student-led, practical workshop with associated training materials, delivered in groups (duration 40 minutes) (50%, MLOs 1, 2, 3). (Note – students to work in small groups but are responsible for an individual component and submission of associated training materials) Component 2 will be an accompanying individual critical reflection on the seminar (2000 words) (50%, MLOs 2, 4). Formative assessment will take place regularly throughout the module. Directed weekly tasks will help students build up their skills of analysis and presentation of appropriate material and formative feedback will be provided by the module tutor and class peers on students’ thoughts and analysis. The learning environment will encourage students to constantly challenge their and others’ ideas through real-world case-studies and industry problems. Students are also encouraged to meet on an individual and/or group basis to receive formative feedback from the module tutor and involve tutors in their peer-led networks as discussed above - ‘academic support’. Have you ever wondered what it really means to be equitable, inclusive, diverse and sustainable in our personal and professional lives? Have

you considered how you will adopt fair and balanced practices as a human being as well as an employee or manager in your chosen field?

We all have a responsibility to ensure we create working environments that embed and thrive on an inclusive culture – one where diversity is

embraced and celebrated. But what does this mean? This module will encourage you to critically reflect on our own practices, values and

assumptions and what they mean for equity and inclusion. We will have difficult but rewarding conversations about unconscious biases and

othering, political correctness and the influence we all have on being able to re-shape our and others’ futures. Most importantly, the module

will provide you with the knowledge to ensure that we continue to stand-up and challenge the many inequalities that exist in society
