5th in the UK for research power

This course will offer you a thorough and scientific understanding of sport, exercise and nutrition.

Interested in how nutritional advice can be used to optimise sport performance? Aspire to help individuals who exercise for recreational purposes to lose weight? Or make your mark by tackling health challenges such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes by supporting individuals with optimal dietary habits?

Our Sport, Exercise and Nutrition BSc (Hons) course will provide a practical, 'real-world', multi and inter-disciplinary emphasis on the latest developments in sport, exercise and health nutrition. You will learn about the inter-play between psychology, physiology and nutrition to support individuals to perform at their best whether their goal is to excel in sport, or their aim is to exercise for health benefits.

At Northumbria we also provide you with the opportunity to study out of discipline modules with an emphasis on sport management and sport coaching, so if you have an entrepreneurial streak or are interested in teaching following graduation, this is the course for you. With access to a sports laboratory and testing equipment in our specialist sport and teaching facility and a bespoke nutrition kitchen, this is a course that combines practical hands-on training with the latest contemporary research in the field of sport and exercise nutrition to set you up for a career in this area.

The scientific content of the curriculum is aligned with the scientific knowledge requirements and competencies detailed in the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and during your studies you’ll be encouraged to critically evaluate existing theory and practice as well as carry out your own independent research.

During your second year you will have the option to undertake a work placement in a related area, study abroad or take our Year in International Business course, so that you can put your knowledge and skills into practice and gain a wider international experience.

Accessibility and Student Inclusion

Northumbria University is committed to developing an inclusive, diverse and accessible campus and wider University community and are determined to ensure that opportunities we provide are open to all.

We are proud to work in partnership with AccessAble to provide Detailed Access Guides to our buildings and facilities across our City, Coach Lane and London Campuses. A Detailed Access Guide lets you know what access will be like when you visit somewhere. It looks at the route you will use getting in and what is available inside. All guides have Accessibility Symbols that give you a quick overview of what is available, and photographs to show you what to expect. The guides are produced by trained surveyors who visit our campuses annually to ensure you have trusted and accurate information.

You can use Northumbria’s AccessAble Guides anytime to check the accessibility of a building or facility and to plan your routes and journeys. Search by location, building or accessibility feature to find the information you need.

We are dedicated to helping students who may require additional support during their student journey and offer 1-1 advice and guidance appropriate to individual requirements.
