What will I learn on this module?
This practically oriented module will focus upon the application of pedagogical research to sport coaching that promote the co-construction of knowledge, effective relationships and ethical practice across a variety of sport coaching contexts. The module therefore complements the largely cognitive based approaches to sport coaching practice included in SP5039: Coaching Skills and Practice and builds upon pre-existing knowledge from SP4008: Introduction to Coaching to equip students with an adaptive tool-kit of coaching behaviours. Due the experiential learning emphasis of this module, students will also be able to expand upon the real-world experience derived from their placement module (SP5029: SER Professional Development and Practice). A central aspect of Sport Coaching Pedagogy is to develop a deep and nuanced understanding key pedagogical research (e.g., constructivist, socio-constructivist) and their application to real world sport coaching contexts. By the end of this module, students will be able to demonstrate and explain how specific pedagogical approaches apply across different sport coaching contexts.
How will I learn on this module?
Taught content will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminar activities, practical workshops, demonstrations, supervised practice and self-directed activities. Learning will be supported through access to a variety of teaching materials available on the eLP. Taught content will be both staff and student led, with an emphasis placed on students’ ability to practically apply theoretical and evidence-based pedagogical approaches to coaching. Practical sessions will provide opportunity to apply theory to practice and receive peer/tutor feedback to develop practical coaching capabilities. Associated seminar sessions will be used to discuss the application of pedagogical theory to practice. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in independent study through the provision of reading lists and topics to be covered in preparation for all taught sessions There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP.
Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive verbal formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There are also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

How will I be assessed?
1. Summative Assessment:
Component 1: Applied Presentation 70% (15-30 minutes).
Students will plan, deliver and evaluate an applied presentation, which will aim to apply key pedagogical principles to a specific coaching context. The applied presentation should last between 15-30 minutes inclusive of an evaluative discussion with a tutor (MLO’s 1, 2, 3,)
Component 2: Portfolio (30%)
Students will provide a supporting portfolio of evidence (e.g., session plans, reflection or narratives) that demonstrates the application of pedagogical theory ethically and equitably. (MLO’s 2, 3, 4)
Verbal formative feedback will be provided to students on a continuing basis during practical and seminar sessions. In these sessions’ case studies of applied examples from the field and research will be examined. Directed tasks and problem solving will require students to utilize their knowledge to critically examine pedagogical theory and develop effective pedagogical processes that are applicable across different coaching contexts.
Students will receive peer and tutor feedback on their efforts. Dedicated sessions will be scheduled into the module to enable students to raise questions regarding the assessment. In addition to verbal formative feedback being given throughout the module, there will be written feedback provided at the end of the students ‘Applied Practical Presentation’ (Summative Assessment).
A whole group feedback session will also take place following the assessment, in which generic feedback is provided.

Module abstract
Sport Coaching Pedagogy is a practically oriented module designed to develop a deep critical understanding of the pedagogical and socio-pedagogical dimensions of sport coaching. With a strong emphasis on the application of pedagogical theory to practice, the module will challenge students to apply pedagogical research to the complex and multifaceted nature of sport coaching. Students will explore how broader socio-cultural influences impact the “doing” of sport coaching enabling them to connect theoretical frameworks to practical scenarios effectively.
A key feature of this module is its emphasis on experiential learning, encouraging student to reflect on their real-world experiences and engage in student- activities. This approach is supported by our expert applied academic staff through guidance, demonstration and constructive feedback. During practical sessions, particular emphasis will be placed upon the enactment of key pedagogical concepts and how they relate to a multitude of coaching contexts such as high-performance sport, physical education, coaching for special populations).
By the end of this module, students will be able to critically analyse and demonstrate how coaches apply specific pedagogical principles within varied coaching environments, equipping them to adapt effectively to the complexities of real-world practice.
