What will I learn on this module?
This module explores aspects of coaching and mentoring within a contemporary police service. The module will centre on the concepts of coaching and mentoring and how these may enable individuals to meet personal, professional, and organisational goals. You will learn about the theories pertinent to the above concepts and their relevance to a policing context. Throughout the module you will understand the importance of mentoring in terms of learning, development, and performance. You will explore how learning from coaching and mentoring sessions can be applied in the workplace. In addition to the above, the module will focus on the principles of work-based assessment within policing and the relevance of this in promoting consistent, professional standards within the organisation.
How will I learn on this module?
Topics will normally be introduced in lectures and explored through blended learning involving a variety of classroom based and on-line activities. The aim is to use interactive presentations, speakers from relevant police departments, tutor-guided and independent student learning, along with student presentations and formative assessments. You will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help online service.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Students will be supported through a variety of means including classroom participation and discussion. All lecture, seminar and workshop material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects. Written or verbal assessment feedback will be used to enable students to understand how they performed and how these aspects can be improved in subsequent assessments.

1. Understand the principles and practices of work-based assessment within policing.
2. Appreciate the importance and applicability of coaching and mentoring to a professional police organisation and the skills required to deliver them.

How will I be assessed?
A 2,500-word report document highlighting the importance of good quality coaching and mentoring in the workplace.
Appointments can be made with the academic lead, post course, to discuss an overview of plans at a convenient time for both student and tutor; students invited to make an appointment. Support from coaches.
