What will I learn on this module?
This module explores aspects of coaching and mentoring within a contemporary police service. The module will centre on the concepts of coaching and mentoring and how these may enable individuals to meet personal, professional, and organisational goals. You will learn about the theories pertinent to the above concepts and their relevance to a policing context. Throughout the module you will understand the importance of mentoring in terms of learning, development, and performance. You will explore who learning from coaching and mentoring sessions can be applied in the workplace. In addition to the above, the module will focus on the principles of work-based assessment within policing and the relevance of this in promoting consistent, professional standards within the organisation.

How will I learn on this module?
Topics will normally be introduced in lectures and explored through learning involving a variety of classroom-based lectures and role play scenarios. The aim is to use interactive presentations, speakers from relevant police departments, tutor-guided and independent student learning, along with student presentations and formative assessments. Students will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help online tool.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Students will be supported through a variety of means including classroom participation and discussion. All lecture, seminar and workshop material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects. Written or verbal assessment feedback will be used to enable students to understand how they performed and how these aspects can be improved in subsequent assessments.

Module abstract
This module engages students in the use of and analysis of key ideas related to coaching and mentoring. The classroom based activities will provide an opportunity for students to test out, analyse aspects of their learning such as their own understandings, thoughts and skills on these based on your own reading and research endeavours. Students will do this in a supportive environment with contributions from your peers. The module will involve role play scenarios for students to practice coaching and mentoring skills.
