OD4015 - Introduction to Perioperative Evidence Based Practice

What will I learn on this module?

You will spend time exploring the various types of evidence that Operating Department Practitioner (O.D.P.) are required to find, appraise and use when they deliver care. You will learn to explore the diverse forms of evidence-based practice (EBP) that impact upon perioperative practice and examine how theoretical frameworks and knowledge inform clinical decision making within the ODP role. You will learn how to use approaches to identify evidence including exploring, describing, testing and reflecting. You will use a variety of appraisal approaches to explore the research and learn to recognise the key factors relating to weaknesses and strengths with published evidence. You will gather evidence from a number of different perspectives and these will be explored so that opportunities and limitations can be critiqued and developed.

How will I learn on this module?

On this module, you will learn by attending workshops hosted on campus. The strategies adopted during workshops will include presentations of your own work and that of your peer group, enquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, debates, journal clubs and group work. Members of the module team will facilitate the workshops.

You will learn by preparing to attend workshops. This preparatory work will be achieved by engaging in Tutor Guided Independent Study. The Tutor Guided materials will include interactive learning packages, electronic lectures, and workbooks. The Module Team will provide advice on how and when to engage in your Tutor Guided Independent Study.

On this module, we advise you to learn by reading. Although this may seem obvious we do not feel that it can be over emphasised .Reading is vital for your academic and clinical development. Reading will provide technical information to enhance the evidence base for your clinical practice. Reading is also necessary for you to appraise the merits of a variety of writing styles, adopting the strongest and best of the characteristics in your own work to demonstrate progression in your scholarship.

You will be engaging in Student Independent Learning. You will be able to choose what you would like to study in more detail. You can spend time preparing for your module assessment and /or generating evidence for your clinical practice placement.

The Module Team will be assessing you. All assessments help motivate learning. On this Module, you will be preparing a 2000 word essay for the module assessment. This essay will review and appraise a research article, with a perioperative perspective and you will be asked to consider how research findings can inform understanding of perioperative practice and thus enable evidence-based practice.

Module abstract

This module will introduce you to the scope of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and encourage you to engage with research evidence that informs clinical practice. You will explore and appraise research and other evidence, which informs clinical practice and decision-making. You will develop an understanding and appreciation of how you can evaluate evidence relating to your own specific perioperative practice. The application of enquiry and evidence within practice will be developed for use within the practice setting. Reflection on experiences will enable you to apply and appraise the use of evidence in different practice contexts. In addition, you will explore barriers to the implementation of EBP and use clinical audit and reflection as a process to consolidate knowledge and develop skills that can be used to function effectively as a registered Operating Department Practitioner.
