What will I learn on this module?
Nursing has a unique and valuable contribution to make to the health and wellbeing of individuals. Within this module, you will explore philosophies of nursing which underpin good practice such as holism and person centred care with patients and clients of all ages with diverse health and nursing needs including surgical and medical problems, pregnancy and childbirth and people with mental health needs or learning disabilities. You will also learn about the impact that national policy in Malta, other global health policy drivers and the requirements of regulating bodies have on nursing practice and the delivery of safe, evidence based care. You will also gain practical nursing skills that will prepare you for caring for children, adults, and older people. You will also be introduced to the importance of personal and professional values required to be a nurse, the importance of effective interpersonal communication and skills for collaborative practice.
How will I learn on this module?
Key lectures will be used to introduce and critically examine theoretical perspectives such as key policy and national drivers that influence care delivery. During seminars enquiry based learning will be utilised enabling you to adopt a patient centred, person focused approach. You will be expected to undertake your own independent reading in order to develop your knowledge and you will be actively encouraged to reflect with peers and lecturers. In addition, you will work independently and in groups on structured activities drawing on electronic resources, in order to equip you with the skills to fully engage with and participate in subsequent face to face learning at MCAST or online in the virtual classroom. We will expect you to prepare thoroughly for these using tutor guided independent learning, so that you can engage fully in class activities and discussions. Tutors will facilitate and support you with practical sessions in a safe and controlled learning environment, to enable you to see the link between theory and practice whilst exploring skills to enhance your confidence and prepare you for clinical practice.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will gain support from face to face dialogue with teachers and your peers during lectures, seminars and practical sessions at MCAST. In this module you will be practicing clinical skills in a safe environment, supervised by tutors and with peer support from your fellow students. Your assignment will be introduced to you at the start of the module and you will also engage in online group tutorial support for your summative assignment part way through the module. Northumbria University and MCAST have access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing. Support will also be available to you online through the E learning portal (Blackboard), social networking and collaborative tools.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment
You will deliver a formative peer group presentation in class, which will explore concepts relating to the summative assessment. Academic supervisors will engage with you to appraise your current level of understanding and appreciation of the concepts within the activity and provide formative feedback for undertaking the summative assignment (MLO 1,2,3 & 4)

You will be expected to undertake a 2000 word written essay, which will focus upon the unique role, function and philosophical foundations of nursing within the context of contemporary health care (MLO 1,2,3 & 4)
You will receive written, online, feedback identifying what you have done well and providing suggestions for improvement.

Module abstract
This module will enable you to gain a knowledge and understanding of contemporary healthcare issues and to develop an appreciation the role of the nurse as a provider and facilitator of care with patients and clients of all ages with diverse health and nursing needs. You will explore the fundamental philosophy, concepts and values that under pin nursing practice and explore the challenges faced by nursing in contemporary healthcare delivery. Some of the teaching strategies that you will be involved in will include experiential learning, simulation, peer group activity and practice skill development. You will be assessed informally during a peer group project that will provide feedback on your knowledge and understanding. This will aid in the completion of the formal assessment which is a 2000 word essay. Both forms of assessment will allow you to articulate your individual emerging perspective on the nature of nursing practice and its relationship to the healthcare context.
