What will I learn on this module?
This practice module will provide you with an opportunity to build upon and extend your portfolio of skills and knowledge relevant to your clinical practice. This module will both support your learning while you are in practice and provide an environment, within university, to consolidate the skills and knowledge necessary to progress effectively. By using a concept curriculum approach, the nursing practice module will support you to learn how to become an accountable professional, lead and manage nursing care, and work in teams.
During your module you will explore clinical decision making in practice through collaboration and partnership working. In your clinical placements you will return to university for two days a week to share your experiences with your peers and module tutors to help develop effective decision making. You will be provided with opportunities to critically reflect on your own role and professional responsibilities in making shared decisions for your continued development as a safe and effective student nurse. By using a developing concept curriculum approach, you will be able to practise safely and have an awareness of your own limitations, demonstrating increasing autonomy and independence when performing a range of practical skills. You will apply your developing knowledge of pharmacology, social and life sciences to nursing practice. Innovative teaching and learning strategies will be used to enhance your learning. This will include the use of digital educational resources to support your learning in relation to concepts such as medicines management. The module will also incorporate simulated practice learning hours to support you to develop appropriate nursing skills.
You will continue to develop your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA) and reflect on your personal and professional development as an evidence-based practitioner. You will reflect on the importance of patient and family centred approaches in addition to the effectiveness of patients and client feedback. Some of your learning will be online via online learning resources stored on BlackBoard Ultra as we help you to facilitate, and organise your independent learning.
How will I learn on this module?
As a second year student nurse you will be afforded the opportunity to proactively engage with your own professional development and that of others. At this stage you will be familiar with the range of learning and teaching strategies employed (online learning materials, digital educational resources, seminars and workshops, simulated practice learning), which will enable you to take ownership of your academic journey within the developing concept curriculum. To explore complex nursing issues nested concepts will be utilised to facilitate depth of analysis through an enquiry-based learning approach. You will also have the opportunity to engage with Learning Leader (LL) training and apply coaching strategies to support novice students in their professional development.
In university and practice settings you will continue to engage with Interprofessional Learning and Learning Leaders where there will be incremental development in the way you learn with and from your peers and other healthcare professionals. This aspect of the practice module will help you develop the skills of supervision, negotiation and relationship management.
In practice placements your Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessor, Academic Assessor and Practice Module Team will support and guide your learning opportunities, working in partnership with Practice Placement Facilitators (PPFs) to enrich your professional development through observation, role modelling and facilitated sessions.
Your learning environments will provide you with opportunities to apply evidence and theoretical knowledge to help you articulate and justify decisions made in practice. This will be enhanced by developing your clinical and reflective skills linking theory and practice. As an empowered independent learner engaging in self-directed study you will be demonstrating your readiness to employ evidence based best practice in communication skills and approaches to provide therapeutic interventions.
In addition, you will spend time in clinical practice placements and a simulated practice experience consolidating and learning new clinical skills to obtain your nursing practice proficiencies listed in your North East Electronic Practice Assessment Document (NEEPAD) and ORA.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
On this module close collaboration between the university and clinical placement areas will continue to provide you with a robust student support network. You will work in partnership with your Practice Supervisor, Practice Assessor, Academic Assessor and Practice Module team to lead on your development in both practice and in university throughout year 2.
You will be allocated a Personal Tutor, who will meet with you regularly and provide you with consistent pastoral support and access to academic guidance.
You will have access to BlackBoard Ultra, where you will find a range of learning materials, videos, workbooks and on-line supportive learning packages.
The module is assessed utilising a Pass/Refer based upon meeting the criteria outlined in the NEEPAD.
The student support and wellbeing service at Northumbria are excellent points of contact for assistance for queries regarding disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries. Further details of practice support can be found via the relevant link in the appropriate section of your programme handbook via the eLP.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Develop a knowledge of pharmacology, social and life sciences and apply this knowledge to nursing practice.
2. Identify, evaluate and share evidence and research that underpins good clinical practice.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the legal and ethical complexity relating to the management of risk in healthcare.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
4. Practise safely and have an awareness of your own limitations, demonstrating increasing autonomy and independence when performing a range of practical skills.
5. Demonstrate collaborative working skills with service users, carers and other professionals evaluating how collaboration improves patient safety.
6. Apply the skills of critical reflection in relation to risk assessment and the implementation of safe practice when analysing issues and incidents emerging from practice.

How will I be assessed?
You will be continuously supervised in your practice placements, this will generate feedback for your assessments.
Formative Assessment
You will undertake a a variety of formative and summative assessments, identified in the NEEPAD, which include episodes of care, medication assessments, written reflections and service user/patient feedback.
At the end of each placement you will reflect on your practice development and review your progress with your Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor (MLO’s 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).

Summative: Following feedback from your Practice Supervisors, your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor will assess you against the proficiencies and evidence in Part 2 of the North East Electronic Practice Assessment Document (NEEPAD) document. (MLO’s 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).

Module abstract
This module spans the whole of your second year as a student nurse. It will assist you in the appreciation and application of evidence and theoretical knowledge to justify shared decisions made in practice. This will be enhanced by developing your clinical and reflective skills linking theory and practice. You will be proactively engaged in your own professional development and that of others, taking ownership of your journey as a professional. There will be opportunity to engage with Inter Professional Learning (IPL) and Learning Leader (LL) training and apply coaching strategies to support novice students in their professional development. As an empowered independent learner, engaging in self-directed study, you will be demonstrating your readiness to employ evidence based best practice in communication skills and approaches to provide therapeutic interventions. You will also be developing a deeper understanding of the module concepts thereby exploring complex nursing issues.
To ensure readiness for progression to part 3 of your programme, you will undertake a 4-week simulated practice experience, where you will practice realistic, complex case scenarios, develop knowledge of patient conditions and repeat, rehearse and reflect on clinical skills development. This combination of approaches will optimise learning, enable timely feedback and ensure quality of the learning environment.
You will be required to attend mandatory training as part of the completion of year 2.
