What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about the use of ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Long Term Conditions (LTCs)’ as a possible treatment strategy in Monitoring and Management of LTCs. As you explore the evidence base and key components of CBT you will develop theoretical knowledge and an understanding of the benefits of adopting this technique with your service users. Topics include:
• Long Term Conditions and Mental Health
• Why CBT - an introduction to using CBT with service users who have physical health conditions
• CBT for Anxiety and Panic
• CBT for Depression
• Therapeutic assessment skills – a central component in CBT
• Using guided discovery
• Formulation – a framework for solving problems
• Treatment goals and treatment strategies – tailored to target the psychological aspects of physical disease
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a blended learning approach which will incorporate the use of the University’s interactive online eLearning Portal (eLP), lectures, discussions and workshops. Technology enabled learning will be enhanced through your interaction with the eLP which will give you the flexibility to access the module materials and aids remotely. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises. Many of the exercises will ensure you co-construct knowledge collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. You will be required to actively engage in research rich learning through an enquiry based approach to ensure authentic learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Support will include feedback from tutors during workshops and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) so that the whole group may benefit. Tutors will guide you through exercises during the timetabled sessions. The University’s eLP offers remote access to materials and aids for reinforcing your learning. Further academic support is available through a one-to-one tutorial with the module tutor who will be responsible for marking your summative assessment.

1. Understand the process and central components of CBT; applying that knowledge to case studies.

2. Use established techniques to critically analyse evidence and draw conclusions about its usefulness to professional practice.
3. Draw upon IT skills to facilitate their professional development and communication strategies e.g. using a PowerPoint Presentation to present a case study.
4. Hold critical discussions with their peers during workshops and in their written summative assessment.

Module abstract
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in Long Term Conditions is a bespoke module aimed at practitioners working in physical health settings. CBT is a proven technique that can be used to support service users who suffer psychological symptoms such as anxiety, panic and/or depression as a result of their physical disease. CBT techniques involve adopting a curious questioning style that will enable practitioners to work collaboratively with service users to understand their individual problems and explore new ways of looking at them. Practitioners who undertake this module will engage in authentic learning through exploration of clinical case studies. Knowledge will be co-constructed collaboratively with your module peers during the workshops. CBT’s structured approach is time efficient and can be used in everyday clinical practice. Successful completion of the module does not allow students to work in CBT Therapy. However, the basic core CBT skills which will be developed and practised throughout the module which will enable practitioners to apply ‘CBT first aid’ techniques to their service users.
