What will I learn on this module?
On this module you will learn about the fundamental principles of the management of buildings from design and build to operation and maintenance/refurbishment, and ultimately through to demolition or deconstruction with a circular economy. As you explore the principles of Built Asset Management you will discover the importance of balancing operational, financial, and engineering issues to ensure the provision of the most cost effective, functional, and sustainable building solutions. Furthermore, the importance of building information management using digital technologies to ensure the safe and efficient management of assets is explored.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a range of teaching methods including workshops and practical sessions. These sessions will offer you the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the principles of built asset management and use this knowledge to further explore these areas in more detail. Your learning during class-based sessions and tutor-guided independent learning will give you the opportunity to demonstrate and apply the knowledge to more complex problems related to managing built assets. You will receive feedback on your progress during these sessions which will enable you to develop your ability to think independently and justify your own opinions. In addition, you may have the opportunity to attend field study visits to local construction sites and buildings to link your academic learning to the practical construction environment. Assessments will give you the chance to demonstrate your learning by evaluating and identifying appropriate solutions and applying them to common construction problems. Assessments will be a mix of individual and group work enabling you to develop the skills to work collaboratively and constructively in multi-cultural environments and teams. Your learning will be further enhanced using technology. You will have electronic access, via the university’s e-learning portal (blackboard) and online library resources, to all learning materials, relevant textbooks and research materials and assessment tasks. In addition, further use will be made of technology in the submission of your assessment and by your tutors in the provision of relevant module information, learning resources and feedback from your assessment tasks.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Academic support for this module will be provided by tutors in a variety of ways to suit your individual needs. Formative feedback will be provided on your progress during class-based sessions and constructive feedback will be given following marking of your submitted assessments. Outside the classroom, you can meet with tutors for additional guidance on your studies. The university’s electronic learning portal will also allow you to seek additional guidance and engage in academic discussion with your tutors and classmates using the available module discussion board.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

Appraise and develop the professional skills required to successfully manage built assets.
Evaluate maintenance and refurbishment requirements for existing buildings.

Understand the importance of balancing operational, economic and engineering principles in the management of built assets to provide cost effective, functional and sustainable buildings.
How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment (Continuous) :
You will have the opportunity during class-based sessions to carry out individual and group-based tasks based on the module themes. Continuous feedback on these tasks will be given by tutors during the sessions through ugh one-to-one discussions and tutor and student led Q&A activities.
Summative Assessment No. 1 (70% weighting):
Using the knowledge acquired from class-based sessions and your research, you will prepare an asset management strategy to be used to manage specific built assets. Your strategy will be in the form of an individual report detailing your fully justified proposals. Reports will be submitted electronically via the e-learning portal. You will receive individual feedback on your report electronically. with further feedback given in class on generic issues arising from the reports. (MLO 1, 2, 3 & 5)
Summative Assessment No. 2 (30% weighting)
You will form into small groups and, using the knowledge from class-based sessions and your research, will prepare schedules to deal with maintenance and repairs on specific buildings. These will be presented to your client (tutor and your classmates) Presentations will be submitted electronically through the e-learning portal. Immediate feedback will be given by the tutor and your classmates in the form of a Q&A session at the end of your presentation. Tutor feedback will be provided to each group and will address both the content and standard of the presentation. (MLO 2,4 & 5)

Module abstract
Within the need of society, the effective management of built assets becomes significant to the delivery and management of successful buildings. This module will introduce you to the key principles and techniques of built asset management and offer you the opportunity to learn how building process and the building product is managed throughout its life with fundamental knowledge and innovative digital technologies. Classroom based sessions may be complimented by any available field study visits where you may have the opportunity to speak to industry professionals, learn about their skills and experiences and see first-hand how the building process and product is managed. This module will give you the foundations on which to develop your understanding of the construction process and advanced information management and prepare you for studying more complex buildings in subsequent years, leading to a comprehensive knowledge of the technical aspects of the construction process and ultimately graduate employment.
