What will I learn on this module?
You will develop your own ability to support the development of athlete potential in a performance focused sport coaching context. You will develop as independent learners, and as coaches. The module features and develops many transferable skills within the developmental processes of performance athletes. These include: reflective practice and learning, performance athlete transitions, decision making, performance moderators, functional training, field based movement assessment and performance analysis. Your role on this module will be to support your athletes as performance focused sport coaches as well as continuing to develop yourself as a coach. You will improve your self-awareness and self-understanding of the personal and professional development needs of both the performance athlete and the coach. You will learn about evaluation and self-reflection in the professional context of performance focused sports coaching. You will get the chance to use performance analysis and reflection tools which will support you with action planning for the future within your coaching role.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through lectures, practicals, seminars and observations. The lectures will give you new theoretical knowledge which you will then apply in a practical setting, following this you will further examine the ideas and experiences that you have encountered within a peer to peer evaluative environment. You will develop your ability to apply theory to practice through a combination of lectures, seminar activities and practical workshops and coaching opportunities. Each week tasks that you will undertake relate to what you have learned and applied these will support the completion of a portfolio of achievement across the module.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
All members of staff involved with SD0508 be available for individualised, pre-booked meetings at specified times for students. During these meetings you will have the opportunity to gain support for (but not limited to) module content, feedback relating to formative and summative assessments as well as general enquiries and issues specific to SD0508.
Additionally you will have access to a Discussion Board (found on the eLP for this module) where enquiries and issues relating to the module can be raised with module staff and student peers providing the necessary support across the whole group.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
Identify performance athlete transitions and recognise different performance moderators;
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
Interpret information and data gathered using performance analysis tools;
Self-appraise performance focused sport coaching practice utilising models of reflection;
Devise an action plan based on performance focused sport coaching practice.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
Generate a reflexive retrospective summary of component ideas, contexts and frameworks recognising those areas where the knowledge base is most/least secure.
How will I be assessed?
Reflexive Report:
Employ feedback from each formative task and your own reflections to provide a reflexive summary of your learning. This should relate to your own professional development of your ability to be able to support the advancement of athlete potential in a performance focused sport environment. (2000 words) You also should also submit a SMART one year action plan for your own coach development in a performance focused sport environment.) (n.b Not included in the overall word count)

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Individual and group tasks that will require student preparation in seminar/coaching practicals and lab based sessions across the module.
Formative tasks addressing contemporary issues including reflective practice, self-regulation, moderators of performance (including transitions, decision making and coach behaviours), athlete transitions, performance and notational analysis and functional sports conditioning .
Interpreting prepared performance sport filmed footage to support the evaluation of performance athletes across a selection of competitive sport scenarios
Academic literature reading/referencing tasks peer and tutor reviewed
Academic writing tasks peer and tutor reviewed

Module abstract
Developing athlete potential looks at developing both athletes and the coaches of those athletes within a high performance setting. You will develop both your theoretical knowledge and practical coaching skills making you more employable when you graduate. You will critically evaluate cutting edge research as well as using technology to enhance the learning of athletes and coaches. Your assessment for this module will be assembled gradually throughout the semester through a series of formative tasks which you will share with one another in small designated seminar groups in a variety of settings; these will vary between classroom, sports hall and online settings. This will give you the opportunity to use a variety of different ways of presenting information and thereby increase opportunities for success. It will also enable you to write about all aspects of the module content. Feedback is critical for athletes and coaches and this module will support multiple modes of feedback e.g. During lectures/seminars/coaching practicals & lab sessions (tutor feedback / peer review); Individual tutor and peer formative task feedback and Discussion board set up via the E-Learning Portal to support weekly group feedback.
