What will I learn on this module?

The module aims to provide you with an overview of the international hospitality industry and its management and strategic and operational practices which accompany it. The module provides knowledge of both historical and current factors which have shaped the industry and provides you with the skills to evaluate changes taking place in key markets and be able to consider the implications of these for hospitality providers.

You will learn about the following topics:

• Definitions of hospitality, hospitableness, hosts and guests; implications for management
• An overview of the historical global development of the industry and an analysis of the factors that have shaped industry development
• An evaluation of global hospitality demand and the industry’s response to changes in consumer demand
• Hospitality marketing and brand management
• Analysis of the distinguishing features of the industry as a service product and the unique challenges presented for management
• The hotel sector – diversity, product appraisal
• Hospitality operations, theory and practice in departments and functions
• Food and beverage management
• International hospitality growth strategies
• International hospitality human resource management
• Hospitality customer service management and quality
• The management of the hospitality experience, customer delight and enlightened hospitality management
• Winter sport hospitality

How will I learn on this module?

You will have lectures which focus on specific topics and introduce you to the theoretical application behind the management of the topic. The lectures will provide industry examples and you will be critically evaluating operational and strategic practice. You will also have a seminar; this will re-enforce the lecture content and be of a practical, problem solving nature, often working in groups. You will often work with case studies. The module is fast paced and on account of the scale and diversity of the industry, new topics areas are introduced at most lectures. You will learn by undertaking independent study and directed learning on the topics; resources for this will be indicated, and these will support your learning experience.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will have a dedicated, experienced member of staff leading the module and providing the lecture and seminar input. This is supported by an e-learning portal which houses all your lecture and seminar material. In this you will have access to an extensive electronic reading list which comprises of selected texts and electronic journals relating to each topic.
In the early weeks you will be given a formative (practice), short essay on a topic. Extensive feedback will be provided on this for you and this assists greatly with your final, summative essay.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• Develop a critical understanding of management in the international hospitality industry. You will learn how to address problems and challenges in a management capacity. (MLO1)

• Critically assess operational and strategic practice in the industry in order to achieve appropriate management solutions. (MLO2)

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Critically engage in research and develop an academic essay of a high standard. (MLO3)

How will I be assessed?

You will undertake a formative (practice) short essay in the early weeks of the module. You will be given full feedback on this. The summative assessment is an academic essay of 3,000 words; this is 100% weighting. The formative work that you undertake and the feedback given contribute enormously to successful outcomes on the summative assessment.

This assessment will address MLO1, MLO2 and MLO3.

Module abstract

International hospitality management is a fast paced module which evaluates key management practices in this vibrant global industry, exploring operations and strategy management in the hospitality industry. You will gain essential knowledge for developing a career in the industry. International examples illustrate industry practice and demonstrate the diversity across different global locations and cultures. The academic focus on content ensures that students develop a rigorous focus and associated skills.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
