What will I learn on this module?

You will learn how organisations can compete successfully in economic terms while managing their corporate, social and environmental responsibility. At the end of the module you will learn to critically evaluate the factors which underpin an organisation’s success (or otherwise) in managing the triple bottom line and will have learned how to use appropriate frameworks to analyse research material and draw useful conclusions.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutor-guided independent learning. The lectures will be used to introduce theories, concepts and frameworks. . Tutor-guided independent learning will encompass a range of activities such as further academic reading, pre-preparation, exercises and tutorials. Seminars will give students the opportunity to learn how to use the material introduced in lectures to analyse and evaluate the extent to which organisations are successful in managing the triple bottom line. Lectures and seminars will be delivered by academic staff with expertise across the different and diverse domains of both strategic management and corporate responsibility, both within and out with the sponsoring subject group.

The module will be assessed by an individual assignment of 3500 words that will focus on an analysis and evaluation of a real-world organization. It will be submitted at the end of the module..

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the formal sessions, including the tutor guided- independent learning activities. . An interactive approach to lecture sessions will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and participants’ own experiences. Throughout, the emphasis will be on high levels of participation, both individually and within small groups or teams. Participants can therefore expect the reflective-practitioner approach to learning to be embedded in all seminar sessions through undertaking activities which facilitate them to apply theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward for the organisation.

Tutor-guided independent learning will feature a range of activities including pre-reading, in-depth academic reading, and preparation for interactive activities. Independent learning will centre upon the provision of activities that enable a deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence. Via the University’s online learning portal, up to six hours of pre-recorded assessment tutorials (support and guidance) will be made available to students.

How will I be assessed?

The module will be assessed by an individual assignment based upon a real-life organization selected by the teaching team; . It will be submitted at the end of the module (MLO 1 and 2).
To assist students in preparing for the assessment, assessment criteria will be provided to enable participants to understand what is expected of them and how they will be assessed on their performance. In addition, via an interactive online learning portal, up to six hours of pre-recorded assessment tutorials (support and guidance) will be made available to students.
Feedback on summative performance in this module will be provided to students via the University’s online portal.

Module Abstract

Corporate responsibility is one of the principal challenges facing contemporary commerce. This module, Strategic Management and Corporate Responsibility, takes an organisational perspective to help students understand how to manage organisational performance, not only in financial terms, but also in terms of its social and environmental responsibilities. In other words, how to manage a ‘triple bottom line’ lies at the heart of this module. Through examining real-world organisations, through case studies and research-led activities, this module allows students to critically analyse and evaluate current practice and discuss practical ways that organisations can respond to the corporate responsibility agenda.
