PE5005 - Developing Personal Management Effectiveness

What will I learn on this module?

This module continues to support your personal and professional development and follows on from the stage one module. In this module you will focus specifically on developing core management skills and understanding the theories, concepts and models that underpin those skills. You will work on further enhancing your personal effectiveness by focusing on how you work effectively with others, through collaborating, influencing, and negotiating. You will learn about building trust and rapport with others, using coaching skills as a manager, giving and receiving feedback, having performance conversations, delegation and the importance of networks

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a range of interactive on-line learning materials, scheduled on-line workshops at key points in the module, tutor guidance, feedback, and independent directed and self-directed learning. Importantly, you will also learn at work, through reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. The workshops will introduce you to module, assessment and key theories and concepts.

Your learning is supported by a Teaching and Learning Plan, offering guidance on what you should be doing on a week by week basis. This will include engaging with the online learning materials, reading, workplace reflection and preparing for the scheduled online interactive workshops. These are designed to help with the completion of the assessment. Within this plan there are also suggested learning activities, which guide you in your independent learning. These activities allow you to reflect and evaluate your knowledge and skills in this area.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The Teaching and Learning plan will provide several prompts and guidance to support you academically. Support will also include opportunities to gain feedback from workshop tutors and peers through the online discussion board and Blackboard Collaborate.

Your module is supported by an e-learning portal, which houses all the module learning materials, workshop resources, interactive activities, assessment details and various other support facilities which are provided by the University.

In addition, to assist you in developing knowledge, you will have access to the University's library facilities, including extensive electronic resources, eBooks and electronic academic journal articles.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

Your knowledge of key concepts, models and theories relating to key management and leadership concepts (MLO1)

Your ability to make sense of your learning through critically reflecting on your work-based and workshop practice and experience. (MLO2)

Intellectual/Professional skills and abilities:

Your capacity to apply your knowledge of work-based learning to enhance your management skills and developing your own personal and professional practice in your employer organisation (MLO3).

Your ability to evidence how you have used a process of self-reflection to enable you to effectively develop as a manager in the workplace (MLO4).

Personal Values attributes

An appreciation of how your cultural and ethical values may impact on your ability to engage and work ethically, constructively and sensitively in a workplace (MLO5)

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment will take place through a combination of group work, assignment discussion and reflection, discussion board activity on the eLearning Portal as well as theory/practice discussions within sessions.

You will also be encouraged to seek informal formative feedback from appropriate others in the workplace including peers, colleagues and mentors.

You will be assessed through the completion of a Personal Reflective Journal (3000 words)
(Addressing MLO 1 to 5)

Criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected in the assignment and how you will be assessed on your performance.

Module abstract

This module will support your personal effectiveness at work by developing your management knowledge and skills. You will learn about building trust and rapport with others, using coaching skills as a manager, giving and receiving feedback, having performance conversations, delegation and the importance of networks. Furthermore, you will engage in a range of on-line learning activities to develop your personal and professional competence and will have an opportunity to practice and get feedback from colleagues, tutors and peers. This module also provides a vehicle for you to apply your learning to your professional practice in the workplace. The module will also strengthen your capacity as an independent and work-based learner.
