What will I learn on this module?
This module is intended to distil your learning and assist you in progressing onto your chosen degree programme, providing the opportunity to explore and learn in a real-world setting.
How will I learn on this module?
Throughout the module, the basic information will be delivered by a series of weekly lectures supported by informal studio/workshop sessions. The practical application of theoretical knowledge will be examined within the context of building surveying profession. The use of practical-based coursework philosophy will reinforce the diverse and creative aspects of the building surveying profession and fundamentals of team working.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module will be delivered in a blend of lectures, smaller seminar groups, small tutorial groups and workshops. Extensive use will be made of the electronic learning portal (ELP) to support and complement the classroom and workplace activity.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1: Understand the context and development of the built environment.
MLO2: visually record and analyse buildings and environments.
MLO3 Establish understanding of sustainability concepts and technologies
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO4 Communicate using the tools and techniques appropriate to construction professional.
MLO5 You will develop the theory and execution of reflective practice
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment will be provided in your portfolio of work, comprising both written and graphical components to reflect the learning outcomes. This will assess MLOs 1-5.
Formative assessment will be given in lectures, seminars and one to one tutorials. Advice will be given into how to improve proposed submissions.

Module abstract
This module is designed as a vehicle to draw together your learning over the year and apply it to a physical location. You will be introduced to different aspects of the built environment, to establish key analytical and observational skills in a physical location, putting into practice what you have learned so far. The learning outcomes of the module will encompass aspects of surveying, mapping, history and practical skills to establish a strong understanding of the development of the built environment.
The module will assist students progressing onto Architecture and Interior Architecture to draw together what you have learnt, providing you with a framework to apply your knowledge and skills, which will assist in your transition to your degree programme. You will learn to analyse a given area, exploring its composition and development, establishing its place within the city in the 21st Century. This will be established through research, mapping, photography, and visual survey. You will develop a proposal for a new or refurbished building in the same location, drawing on site analysis and the use of architectural precedent to inform the proposal.
