What will I learn on this module?
You will apply basic mathematical skills to the mensuration of land and buildings and to the calculation of building costs. This module will complement other level 3 modules and will contribute to an integrated project. You will develop throughout this module numeracy skills relating to the use and evaluation of data relating to the measurement of buildings and land and the calculation of building costs. Topics include:
• Productivity rates
• Estimating building costs
• Scheduling of building work
• Mathematical and arithmetic operations
• Mensuration formulae and techniques
• Organisation of information using databases
The emphasis is on organising and communicating information relating to the costs of buildings through the use of relational databases.You will apply basic mathematical skills to the mensuration of land and buildings and to the calculation of building costs. How will I learn on this module?
There will be both introductory and staged tutor-led sessions to support your learning. A substantial part of the learning materials will be delivered via distance learning methods, through the e-Learning Portal. Practical examples of mathematical principles and applications will be provided via study materials on line in the form of animated, narrated slide shows. Formative assessment tests will be available in the e-Learning Portal (eLP).
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will have access to both the module tutor and the programme leader to support your learning at all stages. For the particular module learning you will have access to a discussion board that will be provided in the e-Learning Portal and this will also enable peer-to-peer discussion of the learning materials. Automatic formative feedback is available to you online for the formative tests.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO1: You will be able to make relevant measurements related to Built Environment scenarios and utilise appropriate units of measurement.
• MLO2: You will be able to analyse data by appropriate methods and present results.
• MLO3: You will be able to perform basic calculations according to recognised industry models.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• MLO4: You will be able to communicate data in meaningful ways
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• MLO5: You will be able to demonstrate the application of mathematics needed in the context of surveying practice and in preparation for study at Level 4
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment: this module is assessed by one piece of written coursework, of two related tasks which combine to assess MLOs 1-5.

Module abstract
The ability to use simple mathematical and arithmetic principles and apply them to land, buildings and the calculation of building costs is a fundamental skill of surveyors, engineers, architects and construction managers alike that makes them eminently employable. In this module you will have the opportunity to assess your own capabilities and select specific and appropriate learning materials. The majority of the module is delivered and assessed online. You have considerable latitude to study at your own pace and decide for yourself when to sit the assessments.
