Northumbria University’s teaching excellence has been recognised in a Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). The new national scheme is aimed at assessing the quality of undergraduate teaching in universities, colleges and other higher education providers. The University’s award recognises that it delivers high-quality teaching, learning and results for its students, and consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements for UK Higher Education.
In making the award the TEF panel noted that Northumbria University students ‘achieve excellent outcomes’, and that they ‘acquire knowledge, skills and understanding that are most highly valued by employers’. The Award reinforces Northumbria University’s continuing excellent performance and growing global reputation for academic excellence. The University has recently achieved its highest ever position in the 2018 Guardian University League Table, 48th, a rise of 20 places in the last two years alone. Northumbria was also ranked 7th nationally in the Guardian University League Table for the level of progress students make whilst at university; including the improvement in their skills and knowledge.
The assessment looks at teaching quality, learning environment, student outcomes and learning gain. While this is the first year in which TEF results have been published it is anticipated that the exercise will develop and become an important tool to help inform student choices.
