Accessible public transport services are essential for the economic productivity of urban areas, and for improving urban sustainability. It is well-established that inadequacies in public transport availability disproportionately affect disadvantaged neighbourhoods and can lead to a broad range of problems including social exclusion, geographical segregation, unequal opportunities, and constrained access to essential services. Transport poverty, in this context, is a manifestation of institutional power, often experienced by disadvantaged and minoritised communities. A better understanding of service availability and experiences of transport in the region is essential to addressing the impacts of transport poverty.
This project will examine how public transport availability varies across different places in Newcastle. The approach will involve collecting local journey data from online trip planners such as Google maps. Researchers will assess the cost of a sample of journeys within the region, as well as using journey notes, diaries and photographs to better understand everyday experiences of public transport in Newcastle.
