Joy Grenyer

Joy is Head of Student Life in Student Life and Wellbeing, managing a service which provides support to students on a broad range of essential topics including funding, immigration and welfare. The service is also responsible for the university’s response to, and management of, serious student welfare cases.

Joy plays a key role for the university in these cases, chairing case conferences to manage the risk such incidents represent and to ensure students are supported as part of its essential Duty of Care. She  works closely with all support services, including security, legal and comms, as well as external agencies including the NHS, the mental health crisis team and the police.

After graduating from Newcastle Polytechnic in 1989, Joy put her BA in French, Russian and Politics to practical use during a three year residency in Paris, where she taught English and acted as a tour guide for groups travelling across Russia and Poland.

Returning to the north east, she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in International Marketing at Sunderland University before joining Durham County Council to manage a student exchange programme with colleagues in France, Hungary, Germany and Russia. She also began lecturing part-time at both Northumbria and Sunderland Universities as well as teaching English to French football players at Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United.

Joy joined Northumbria University in 2001 as an International Student Support Manager and went on to hold a number of key roles for the organisation in this area before becoming Head of Student Life in 2017.
