Dr Yunhong Jiang

Associate Professor

Department: Applied Sciences

Dr Yunhong Jiang is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Fellow in the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) at Northumbria University. He completed his PhD in Biochemical Engineering at the University of Leeds, with subsequent postdoctoral roles at the University of Leeds, University of Bath, and University of Bristol.

His research spans microbial cell and materials interactions, antimicrobial surfaces, biological metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), functional living materials, and sustainable biopolymers. His recent work centres on developing thermally insulating materials derived from sustainable, widely available raw materials, focusing on functional properties and moisture-dependent heat transfer in the built environment. He collaborates extensively with biologists, chemists, and engineers across interdisciplinary projects.

He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Microbiology Society and is a Certified Passive House Designer. His research has received funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Leverhulme Trust, and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
