Northumbria academic invited to advise government on social media use

23rd May 2018

Dr Wasim Ahmed from Newcastle Business School has delivered a talk to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) government office on social media use.

Entitled: “Social Media Use in UK government Departments: Benefits, Challenges and Risks” Dr Ahmed also discussed the value of social media data. Speaking at the DWP’s offices in Sheffield, he addressed attendees from across other government departments including HM Revenue and Customs.

Dr Ahmed has advised the DWP previously on using social media in government settings. He said: “Social media platforms have gained in popularity for UK government departments communicating with citizens and monitoring public views. However, data from social media have a number of limitations, and engaging with certain platforms for communication brings additional risks and challenges. In my invited talk I was able to outline a number of these.”
