International Workshop on Life Cycle Assessment in Photovoltaics

Room 304D, The Business Hub, 3rd Floor, Sandyford Building,

Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

8-10 July 2025

Solar energy is now the cheapest form of electricity and is set for massive global expansion in the coming decades. However, this expansion raises key questions:

  • Which photovoltaic technologies will dominate the market?
  • Where will solar photovoltaics manufacturing be located?
  • How can photovoltaics manufacturing be more sustainable?
  • How will critical minerals resource availability be met?
  • What are the optimum recycling strategies for photovoltaic modules?

This inaugural 2-day international workshop will bring together experts from across the world to the North East of England to discuss the answers to these questions and train a new generation of postgraduate students in life-cycle assessment (LCA).

Workshop format:

Day 1: LCA training (for postgraduate students) and welcome reception (late afternoon)

Day 2: LCA research talks, roundtable discussions and social event

Day 3: Consolidation discussions and closing lunch
